Peter Steven on Luck, Inspiration, and the Joy of Never Running Dry

At Talent Is Timeless, we run Monthly Songwriting Challenges to help keep our members writing, sharing, and connecting. Each month, we spotlight some of the incredible songwriters who placed in these challenges — inviting them to share a bit more about their lives, their creative journeys, and the stories behind their songs.

This month, we’re featuring 55-year-old songwriter Peter Steven from Melbourne, Australia, a member of the Melbourne Song Circle. Peter joined Talent Is Timeless in 2025 and recently caught attention with his song submitted for the “Inspiration and Empowerment” Monthly Challenge. Peter describes himself as “ridiculously lucky” when it comes to songwriting inspiration.

“It seems to lurk around every corner like a nosy neighbor,” he jokes. “Pick up a guitar, and bam! A new melody appears like it was waiting just for me.”

His song began with a simple guitar pattern and a melodic hook that stuck.

“Sometimes a song on the radio sneaks into my brain and hijacks my creativity — which is both annoying and brilliant,” he laughs. The hardest part, he admits, is “filling in the blanks without accidentally writing a grocery list instead of lyrics.”

Peter’s love of songwriting started back in school.

“My school friends formed a musical outfit, and they were very good,” he recalls. “I thought, if those dum dums can do it, so can I.”

What began as friendly rivalry turned into a lifelong creative outlet. His first composition was a revelation.

“It had a great melody. I thought, did I really write that? Was it something I heard? No… wow. I should stick at it.”

Over the years, Peter has written and demoed more than 100 songs for his first (and only) band, earning enthusiastic feedback from gig audiences.

“We were doing something right,” he says modestly, “but the planets weren’t in alignment for us.”

Like many songwriters, he’s experienced challenges collaborating with others.

“Some musicians are wonderfully open and collaborative,” he says. “Others can be very egocentric and won’t consider what you contribute as valid.”

Joining Talent Is Timeless has reignited his motivation.

“It’s given me a reason to finish the songs I have started,” he says.

The Melbourne Song Circle community has also become a space to share ideas and stay creatively accountable. Perhaps the most surprising thing about Peter’s journey is his enduring creativity.

“My well of inspiration has yet to run dry,” he says with characteristic humor. “Sometimes it feels like melodies are just lining up, waiting their turn.”

His advice to other songwriters over 50 is as practical as it is hopeful:

“Keep listening to new music — it may be harder to find, but it’s out there. It will inspire you to be your best.”

Peter’s story is a refreshing reminder that inspiration doesn’t always need chasing; sometimes it finds you — especially when you’re still curious enough to pick up the guitar and see what happens next.
