John Barwick on Resilience, Authenticity, and Winning with Sweet Dreams, Caroline
At just 51, North Carolina-based songwriter John Barwick has already lived through several chapters of music, loss, and rediscovery. Joining Talent Is Timeless in December 2024, John entered the Pop category and won the Global Contest with his powerful song Sweet Dreams, Caroline. The inspiration came from a heartbreaking news story. “I’d read a news article about a family who had lost their young children in a house fire. Obviously devastating, and as a parent myself it just stayed with me. How do you accept and move on from something like that? And what grace and understanding do people unfamiliar with this type of loss and grief extend to those who are adrift in or consumed by the darkness?”
When he learned his song had been selected, John says: “Absolutely stunned and excited in equal measure! The possibility that a song I wrote and recorded at home in June ’24 would resonate with the judges and be selected was the furthest thing from my mind when I entered the contest. Just goes to show you what can happen when you put yourself out there.”
John’s journey into songwriting began as a teenager — initially, he admits, as a way to impress girls. That decision had a lasting impact, as he met his wife through a bandmate in high school. But life brought challenges. After years of writing and performing, he eventually sold most of his gear and walked away from music, burned out by projects that never took off. Then in 2020, when his wife was diagnosed with cancer, John found himself writing again as a form of release and catharsis. Thankfully, her treatment was successful, and the songs kept coming.
A turning point for John was shifting his mindset: “If it’s authentic and I like it and I’ve done it as well as I can, that’s good enough.” That change opened doors he hadn’t imagined before, including entering a songwriting competition and ultimately winning. He reflects that his proudest achievement to date is “100% having my song selected as the winner of this year’s competition.” What makes his story even more surprising is where his songs come to life: “The two songs of mine that made it to the final round were both recorded in a 6′ x 6′ corner of my bedroom closet using relatively cheap gear.” Proof that creativity doesn’t need expensive setups — just heart, persistence, and authenticity.
Talent Is Timeless has given John new perspective and drive. “Hearing people 50+ telling their stories through their songs, with many possibly doing their best creative work ever, has truly been inspiring to me and will push me to continue to write for the rest of my life.” His advice for other songwriters over 50? “Write as much as you can and share it with others.”
