At Talent Is Timeless, we run Monthly Songwriting Challenges to keep members writing, sharing, and connecting. Each month, we spotlight some of the incredible songwriters who placed in these challenges — inviting them to share a bit more about their lives, their creative journeys, and the stories behind their songs.
This month, we’re featuring Ian Middleton, a 64-year-old songwriter from just outside Cambridge, UK, who first joined the Talent Is Timeless Facebook community in early 2021 and became more active on the site in October 2022.

Ian came to songwriting relatively late in life— “I started playing guitar and writing songs in 2007, after a head injury took me out of the workplace,” he says. “These were simple verse-chorus numbers that seemed to arrive from the Aether.” Around the same time, he began experimenting with electronic music, creating ambient soundscapes with a friend and releasing a full 12-track album every year from 2007 to 2013. That hands-on experience with digital audio and recording gave him the tools to shape future songwriting in unexpected ways.
Still, songwriting remained something personal—quiet, exploratory, and more for himself than any kind of public release. “I’ve always been pragmatic about the small scale of what I do,” he says. “It’s personal and not made for a larger audience.”
So when his entry for the July 2025 Monthly Songwriting Challenge placed in the top selections, Ian was genuinely surprised. The prompt that month was “parts of the body,” and while he initially explored a jazzy 7th-and-9th chord structure, it was the state of the world that ultimately shaped his lyrical direction. “The news just kept getting darker,” he says. “There was this growing ‘othering’ of people, of entire races—and it hit me that we all share the same bodies, the same hearts, the same breath. We’re all the same.”
From that clarity came We’re All the Same — written as much from instinct as from planning. “Some of the melodies arrived while I was recording the straight-to-camera take,” Ian admits, “ditching the jazzier elements to create something far more direct.” Though his voice wasn’t where he wanted it that day, he pushed forward anyway. “I tend to write songs for other people to sing, and I’m working on putting this in place, for this song. I was pleased by the response and kind words of encouragement from the community.”
Ian’s creative arc has included a 25-year hiatus from music after playing bass in the 1980s. He eventually returned to songwriting, and interestingly, he’s noticed how those old bass habits still show up in his lyrics: “Weirdly, my word placement is not unlike how I play bass. All activity around beat 3 and 4 in the bar.”
Since joining Talent Is Timeless, Ian has found not only feedback but friendship. “The monthly feedback—both said and unsaid—has been invaluable. Additionally I’ve met and played music with many members of the community and building friendships that have great meaning.” His advice to fellow songwriters over 50? “Music isn’t solitary. Get involved and play with other musicians—even if it feels scary.”
Ian’s journey is proof that even in later chapters of life, music can be an act of connection, resilience, and quiet courage. You don’t have to be chasing the charts to write something that matters. Sometimes, all it takes is the willingness to keep going—and to share the melody as it comes.
