At 65, Melbourne-based songwriter Lucia Glavas is proof that it’s never too late to embrace creativity and share your voice with the world. Although she loved writing stories as a child—winning second prize for a dramatic spy story in school—Lucia’s creative side took a back seat to work and family life. It wasn’t until 2018 that she began writing songs, inspired by her guitar, a blossoming melody, and the encouragement of her music teacher, Greg Franklin. “He believed in me and helped me come out of my shell,” she says.

Her songwriting process often begins with a tune or chord progression, followed by words that naturally form into a story. Her winning song is a joyful celebration of love and inspiration, crafted to be relatable to anyone, regardless of their own circumstances.

Despite balancing full-time work, Lucia has embraced every opportunity to share her music. Performing her first original song at an open mic was a turning point: “People came up to me and told me they loved it. That moment gave me the confidence to keep writing.” Her proudest milestone came when she recorded and released My Eyes Are Full Of Love on streaming platforms. “I found it hard to believe I was capable of doing this at my age,” she says.

Lucia recently joined Talent Is Timeless and has already found immense value in the supportive and collaborative community. “I think we can all grow as a group and learn from each other,” she says.

She’s also defied skeptics who doubted her commitment to music. “Some friends thought I was wasting my time,” she recalls. “But releasing my first song in my senior years is surprising even to me.”

Her advice to songwriters over 50 is simple but powerful: 

“Follow your dream and don’t let anyone take it away from you.”
