Song Spotlight is a live song critique session hosted by GRAMMY-nominated songwriter and Berklee educator Shane Adams.
Each session, a handful of members bring a song-in-progress (or one they thought was finished) to be deconstructed in real time — in front of the group, for the group’s benefit.
Shane listens, breaks the song down, and tells you exactly what’s working and what isn’t.
- Is the melody doing what it should?
- Are the lyrics landing, or getting in their own way?
- Is the rhyme scheme too neat, too loose, or fighting the emotion?
- Could the structure carry more weight harmonically?
- Is it simply too long?
These are the small, specific shifts that separate a song that’s good from one that connects with anyone who hears it — and they’re exactly what gets uncovered here, live, with nowhere to hide and everything to gain.
You don’t need to bring a song to benefit. Half the magic of Song Spotlight is in the listening: hearing different songs taken apart teaches you to hear your own with new ears.
