At 62, Somerset-based songwriter Graham McPherson has proven that it’s never too late to return to a lifelong passion.

Graham wrote his first song in his mid-teens, shortly after picking up an electric guitar. “It was pretty awful,” he laughs, “but it was the start of my musical creativity.” He played in a pop/rock band at school, gigging around Somerset, before walking away from music at 20. Four decades later, Graham picked up his guitar again—this time on the streets, busking and performing at open mics.

“It wasn’t a single breakthrough moment,” he reflects, “but a slow, organic growth encouraged by the positive responses of people of all ages to my songs.”

One of Graham’s proudest achievements is hearing strangers clap and comment favourably on his original songs while busking. His latest piece, inspired by the idea that some songs are “hidden gold waiting to be mined,” explores how music can travel freely through the airwaves, resonate with listeners, and take them on an emotional journey.

Joining Talent Is Timeless gave Graham a fresh perspective and renewed confidence. “It’s a great platform for musicians to develop their craft on all fronts,” he says. “I’ve had constructive feedback from various professionals. It almost feels like a school of midwives—helping to deliver babies… songs, that is.”

One of the biggest surprises for Graham has been discovering that his voice has improved in his 60s. “That has greatly encouraged me to write new songs,” he says. His advice to other songwriters over 50? 

“Enjoy the process and write the song in your heart.”
