Challenge Champion: Anne Marshall
At Talent Is Timeless, we run Monthly Songwriting Challenges to help keep our members writing, sharing, and connecting. Each month, we spotlight some of the incredible songwriters who placed in these challenges — inviting them to share about their lives, creative journeys, and the stories behind their songs.
This month, we’re featuring Anne Marshall, a 52-year-old songwriter from near Banbury in the UK, who joined Talent Is Timeless back in March 2023.
Anne’s path into songwriting began in her late teens. “I started writing songs in my late teens after having piano lessons as a child,” she says, describing how music grew from a personal exploration into a deeper creative outlet. But as often happens, life picked up pace. “I was too busy working and didn’t have time for music for many years,” she shares. It wasn’t so much a conscious decision to step back as simply the way time gets swallowed by careers, responsibilities, and everyday life.
The theme of the Monthly Songwriting Challenge that Anne placed in was “packing up.” It got her reflecting on the universal feelings around moving on, saying goodbye, and starting new chapters. “I was thinking about all the different meanings that might have,” she explains. It’s the kind of open-ended prompt that can reveal surprising personal truths — and Anne’s song captured something many listeners resonated with.
Before discovering Talent Is Timeless, Anne kept her songs largely to herself. “I only shared my songs with my family before,” she admits. Joining the community changed that. It nudged her to step out of her comfort zone, submit her work for challenges, and hear what others thought. Placing joint first in the Monthly Songwriting Challenge was a huge moment: “Joint first in this monthly challenge!” she beams when asked about her proudest achievement so far. It’s a milestone that not only recognized her talent but also validated her courage to share.
Anne’s advice to other songwriters over 50 is simple and direct: “Keep writing!” It’s the kind of encouragement that sounds modest, but for anyone who’s ever put pen to paper (or fingers to strings) after years of silence, it’s deeply meaningful.
Anne’s story is a reminder that there’s no expiry date on finding your voice. Sometimes it lies dormant for years, waiting for the right invitation to come back out. And when it does, it might surprise you with just how much it has to say.
