He had their posters on his wall
And had made heroes of them all
With a dream that one day he would be up there with them
He’d ride whenever he could
To find out if he was any good
Still the call grew louder till there was no stopping him
For years he put his body on the line
Won enough to keep on trying
But there was another dream now with him each night
There was this lady in his life
Who would one day be his wife
And this call was stronger than any man can fight
But try as he might he couldn’t walk away
From the lure of the battle with its lousy pay
The beast he would fight wasn’t out in the ring
It was somewhere deep down inside of him
And there was nothing that could tame this strangest of calls
Then one day she said that she had had enough
Of living out of the back of a truck
And she wanted that home that they had always planned
A clock was ticking away inside
That she could no longer hide
And a call that no man could ever hope to understand
But try as he might he couldn’t walk away
From the lure of the battle with its lousy pay
The beast he would fight wasn’t out in the ring
It was somewhere deep down inside of him
And there was nothing that could tame this strangest of calls
There was one call that she prayed would never come
A stranger who would tell her he won’t ever come home
She doubted that she would have the strength on her own
To live their life now all alone
And she just might answer his call to wherever he had gone
