2025 Competition Lyrics Entry:

What time you comin’ by? by Yasmine and Peter Giles

Lyrics

VERSE 1
Waiting for the stars to go out
So I can get some sleep
I made sure that the baby fed
The bath I ran was deep
Thinking over all the things
I said and didn’t say
Maybe I’ll get to apologise
And make it up one day

CHORUS
“What time you comin’ by?”
That’s what I used to say
Sure enough, true to your word
You made it every day

Always made it short and sweet
To rest your weary head
I look at you, your love so true
Never dreaming I’d never ask you
“What time you comin’ by” again.

VERSE 3
It’s the night before Christmas
That I just can’t forget
What happened isn’t all it seemed
But some things don’t, I guess
Leaving isn’t everything
And staying has a price
Funny how the biggest things
Are like little rolling dice

CHORUS
“What time you comin’ by?”
That’s what I used to say
Sure enough, true to your word
You made it every day

Always make it short and sweet
To rest your weary head
I look at you, your love so true
Never dreaming I’d never ask you
“What time you comin’ by?” again.

VERSE 4
Crumple up the letters now
And put them in the fire
See them burn a whole in me
And fill it full of light
Everything seems deigned to be
A lesson that we learn
Walking down that lonely road
I’ll find another turn

CHORUS
“What time you comin’ by?”
That’s what I used to say
Sure enough and true to your word
You made it every day

Always make it short and sweet
To rest your weary head
I look at you, your love so true
Never dreaming I’d never ask you
“What time you comin’ by?” again.

Bio

ARTISTS’ BIO

Whether channelling Barbra Streisand, performing her own music or playing tribute to the sounds of the 70’s and 80’s, Yasmine is a true all round artist, entertainer and inspirational music teacher of children.

At an early age she auditioned for BBC TV’s The Big Time – Pop Singer, and was chosen by Esther Rantzen twice for the coveted prize. But in the end, as she was only a very young 16 yr old, she deferred to the 19 yr old Sheena Easton (James Bond, 42nd Street). Yasmine went on to write and play her own music, and she sang and played the very first theme tune for BBC 2’s Food and Drink programme while working for the BBC as a PA for Will Wyatt!

Yasmine received the prestigious Kawakami Prize at the Yamaha World International Song Festival. Her talents also led to her being offered the lead role of Nala in The Lion King in the West End and Los Angeles without audition.

Starting the piano at the tender age of three, Yasmine went on to teach herself jazz, soul, pop and latin music at the age of only 11. This combined with her classical training in piano and voice makes her a highly professional singer and pianist. She learned her performance craft playing extensively in virtually every 5 star hotel in London, as well on the jazz circuit (Pizza Express Dean Street, The 606 Jazz Club, The Vortex, and regular concerts at Pizza on The Park).

Yasmine now lives in Surrey and combines teaching and performing at private functions with recording original songs with her husband, Peter Giles, one of the founder members and original bass player of the legendary prog rock band King Crimson.
