2025 Competition Lyrics Entry:

Violins in the Distance by Jason Bennett

Lyrics

Violins in the Distance

Will you wait for me
Like you always do
So, I can hear the music
I’ve grown accustomed to

Taking my place in line
Every week it’s the same
Catch up on world news
Till they call my name

I hear those violins in the distance
It’s the sound of resistance
At this very instant
I hear those violins in the distance

Now I’m stuck in a loop
I don’t control the radio
It’s a concert on repeat
Songs I’ve come to know

Those haunting melodies
From machines as they turn
The opera house is on fire
And I have to let it burn

I hear those violins in the distance
It’s the sound of resistance
At this very instant
I hear those violins in the distance

In this dark symphony
Hope justifies the fear
The flames are in control
I close my eyes and I hear

Those melodic sounds
They come with no regrets
When the curtain closes
No one ever forgets

Hearing those violins in the distance
It’s the sound of resistance
At this very instant
They’re playing those violins in the distance

  1. The song is about a cancer patient going for treatments. The violins represent the sound of the medical machinery. The patient has had several treatments, so, now the patient always hears the “Violins in the Distance.” The violins are the sound of the weapons we use in the fight against cancer.
