2025 Competition Lyrics Entry:

Just about Dolly by David Foster-Smith

Lyrics

Just About Dolly?

She’s singing from the country with a folky bluesy rhythm,
A dash of bluegrass southern rock thrown in!
With cups of inspiration, topped up with blonde ambition,
That Smoky mountain haunting deep within.

What else can be inside that head?
A bow with many strings..
A mind of many colours….a polymath that sings.

She has it …….and she knows,
Here she comes,
And there she goes!

2. She crosses generations just rhyming wit and charm,
With her smile just like a breath of spring.
Even when a big Apple has a bite to leave her homesick,
Whatever she brings we sing.

Maybe rare and gentle there so never judge the cover
She’s a precious book to look inside,
With a Mojo like no other.

She has it …….and she knows,
Here she comes,
And there she goes!
She has it …….and she knows,
Here she comes,
And there she goes!

  1. Thanks for the response. This actually took a lot of working out to make existing lines and lyrics from Dolly’s songs not just join up as quotes, but relay her perceptive and clever use of imagery and parallels used. As both a lifelong fan and aspiring songwriter she has always impressed me since the mid 70’s when I first became aware.
I shall be using this lyric in a song I am now working on which I hope to put on here soon.

  2. Thanks very much. Quite a challenge to put together a song about such an icon. People forget what a great songwriter she has been for so many years and is still relevant.
Have to work on the music for this now!
