Brian´s saga by Christian Lunger

Lyrics

[VERSE 1]
I was born in Glasnevin on a sunny day
grew up on the streets close to Dublin Bay.
I had fun and friends and family,
a happy childhood – what´s more to say.

[CHRORUS]
On Sundays we walked along Dublin Bay,
watched the waves roll in from the sea.
We saw the yellow flowers bloom,
I was happy on those days.
I was happy on those days.

[VERSE 2]
I grew up a strong young man,
found love and a wife and then,
lived with a guiltless heart, they’d say.
Until I found the bottle and lost my way.

[SOLO]

[VERSE 3]
By the Liffey I had my tent,
at Lower Baggot Street my place.
I sat by the black fence with my back bend
a cardboard cup with change in my hands.

Once a week I talked to Jesus
on his bench next to his fathers´ house.
Then I went to O´Donoghues
for a pint and some sad Irish tunes.

[CHRORUS]
On Sundays I walked along Dublin Bay
I watched the waves roll in from the sea.
I saw the yellow flowers bloom,
I was happy on those days.
I was happy on those days.

[VERSE 4]
They found me on a cold winter day
I died lonely, next to my beloved Bay.
Finally, I found my way
back to Glasnevin on a sunny day.

[CHRORUS]
On a Sunday, they carried me along Dublin Bay.
They watched the waves roll in from the sea,
from where I saw the yellow flowers bloom,
I was happy on those days.
I was happy on those days.
I was happy on those days.

Bio

It has been in 2018 that the Austrian Christian Lunger discovered music. Inspired by a bucket list he created with his children, he taught himself to play the guitar and began writing songs. And since then, it has become an important pillar of his life. A creative way to enjoy life.

Musically, as well as in terms of storytelling, he is strongly influenced by American folk music and German-speaking singer-songwriters. Along the way he met two thoroughbred musicians Alexander Scheiber (guitar) and Mirko Schuler (vibraphone and mallets). Together they create poetic and thoughtful images of remembering and forgetting. To his own big surprise, he reached the final of the Wintoklong Songwriter Competition 2021 and the final of the Sanremo Senior Competition 2023. Lately he is cooperating with a fellow Austrian singer-songwriter Alex Folterbauer to create a joint programme.

Some notes on the lyrics
This song is about the great places I saw and experiences I had during a visit in Dublin, but as well several times passing by a man sitting in Lower Baggott street with an old christmas sweater and a paper cup. Being a fan of The Dubliners I started writing the first lines of the song in O’Donoghue’s Bar by a Pint and a stew. I wanted to weave everything I experienced into the story of this man including the beautiful and the tragic. I gave him the name of a high king of Irland.
