Pebbles In The Sea by Peter Whitelaw

Lyrics

Catch the sun when it comes out
It won’t be here for long
Wind and rain return today
This summer all but done

Dark clouds move in to fill blue skies
Tells me it’s time to go
There’s nothing now to keep me here
The sun has sunk too low

Distant skies stretch far and wide
Keep sea and stars apart
It looks like it’s the end of days
Maybe it’s just the start

Cotton clouds give way to grey
White pillows turn to stone
I walked the beach again today
Again I walked alone

Just for a moment you were there
Throwing pebbles in the sea
Just briefly, fleeting, by my side
And then again, just me

Rock pools fill with breaking waves
The children all gone home
No longer fleeing pirate ships
Or gathering shells amid the foam

Bodies bronzed by summer sun
Have said their fond farewell
And take with them sweet memories
Of beach and ocean swell

New found friends, are sad it ends
They’ve agreed to meet next year
Something to look forward to
I’m not sure I’ll still be here

Such a shame this can’t go on
But then, nothing ever does
Nothing left but memories
That’s all I have of us

Just for a moment you were there
Throwing pebbles in the sea
Just briefly, fleeting, by my side
And then again, just me

I turn my collar against chill winds
There’s no one else around
A wave breaks just in front of me
But barely makes a sound

The seaweed washed upon the shore
Lies bleaching in the sun
A rock fall scatters sleeping gulls
This day is all but done

Deserted beach, no one in sight
Seems crowded just the same
This autumn day is still too bright
I think I just felt rain

Just for a moment you were there
Throwing pebbles in the sea
Just briefly, fleeting, by my side
And then again just me

I don’t call this town home no more
It’s just the place I live
Maybe it’s time to pack my bags
I’ve got nothing left to give

Shake off the bonds that hold me here
And walk a different beach
Time to seek out friends elsewhere,
Before they’re out of reach

I walked the beach again today
Where we walked hand in hand
There’s nothing left, just memories
Like castle’s made of sand

Just for a moment you were there
Throwing pebbles in the sea
I will come back from time to time
But first I must break free.
