Lyrics
I pass this spot most every day
And when the rain has blown away
It leaves the mark of this poor soul
Upon the road, as dark as coal.
A haunted face so wracked in pain
Stares up at me, just after rain
Clouds now gone, the day set fair
But once again he’s lying there
He seems to cry but makes no sound
Yet tears lie scattered on the ground
His sleep disturbed – I’ve set him free
An icy chill bites back at me
A fallen man, a bloody stain
Arrived upon the wind again
To end his peace seemed so unfair
Twisted, torn, tormented, bare
Where he comes from, I couldn’t say
Nor why he should choose this place to stay
Maybe it’s chance and not by choice
A fallen man with silent voice
The haunted look upon his face
Tells me here’s not his resting place
He died somewhere, quite far away
But after rain, returns today.
Ohhhh,ohhh,ohhh
How I’ve tried to fight it
Sometimes I wish I could just walk by and look the other way
But ohhh,ohhh,ohhh
I shouldn’t try to fight it
I need to know if he’s good to go when the dark clouds drift away
He died in pain, his face that shows
Hiroshima, Pompeii – who knows
Execution or sacrifice
Was it man or beast that took his life
A barb wire fence, a prison cell
Or Mother Nature raising hell
He calls to me – I feel his pain
I looked away – he cries in vain
A violent death he could not flee
Now lying there for all to see
A grim reminder from the dead
How life and death hang by a thread
They’ll bide their time and wait for us
They know we will, they know we must
It rained today, I saw him there
Twisted, torn, tormented, bare
Ohhhh,ohhh,ohhh
How I’ve tried to fight it
Sometimes I wish I could just walk by and look the other way
But ohhh,ohhh,ohhh
I shouldn’t try to fight it
I need to know if he’s good to go when the dark clouds drift away
No peace today for this poor soul
As lightning forks and thunder rolls
With every storm, a new nightmare
His restless soul seeks peace elsewhere
The air turns cold, the heavens black
Not long now, he’ll soon be back
And come to me as I walk by
Through raindrop tears from cloudy skies
Did someone pray, did someone care
Was he laid to rest with loved ones there
Or is he forced to spend his time alone
On a makeshift grave of mud and stone
Clouds pass by, a breeze now blows
The mood has changed, it’s time to go
The gentle wind turns to a roar
I say goodbye and he’s there no more
As I fall sleeping in my chair
I see that face, that haunting stare
One day I’ll stop and ask him why
He calls to me as I pass by
The rain has stopped, and soon he’s gone
Maybe I’m just his chosen one
The drying winds take him away
But he’ll return, next rainy day
Ohhhh,ohhh,ohhh
How I’ve tried to fight it
Sometimes I wish I could just walk by and look the other way
But ohhh,ohhh,ohhh
I shouldn’t try to fight it
I need to know if he’s good to go when the dark clouds drift away
I need to know if he’s good to go on this dark and cloudy day
And when the rain has blown away
