Lyrics

ÈUNO
by Alessandro D’Andrea Calandra

My name is Èuno.
Whoever is one counts as one.
A beast in human form.
I know my destiny.

Let us arm ourselves, comrades.
The countryside belongs to those who hoe the land.
And that thief of a master,
we will hang him upside down.

This is the history of Sicily from years ago
Of Èuno, the beggar who went from slave to king
He who pulls the rope becomes the rope maker and goes backwards
Until he breaks it, and there are no saints on earth
For those who have always taken one step forward and two steps back

My name is Èuno
He who is one counts as one
But with these stinking bastards
He who is one counts for nothing
Let us arm ourselves, comrades
The countryside belongs to those who plough it
And the bellies of the masters
We pierce with pitchforks

My name is Èuno.
Those who are one count as one.
I was born a free man.
And I died a free man.
My comrades are on the crosses.
The countryside belongs to those who win.
But breaking these chains
Was worth the blood in my veins.

This is the history of Sicily from years ago.
Of Èuno, the beggar who went from slave to king.
But for those who are oppressed, there are no saints on Earth.
The swords came and killed us all
Èuno, you took one step forward and two steps back

My name is Èuno
Whoever is one counts as one
I was born a free man
And I died a free man
My companions are on the crosses
The countryside belongs to the victors
But breaking these chains
Was worth the blood in my veins

Èunu mi chiamu
Cu è unu cunta unu
Di vestia a furma d’omu
Canusciu ‘u me distìnu
Armamuni cumpagni!
Di cu azzappa su’ ‘i campagni
E lu latru d’u patruni
L’appinnemu a pinzuluni

Chista è la Storia d’a Sicilia anni darrè
D’Èunu ‘u sciratu ca di schiavu si fa re
Cu ‘a corda tira fa ‘u curdaru e va a n’arrè
Finu c’a rumpi e Santi ‘n terra nun ci nn’è
Pi cu ha sempri fattu un passu avanti e dui a n’arrè

Èunu mi chiamu
Cu è unu cunta unu
Ma cu sti fitenti
Cu è unu ‘un cunta nenti
Armamuni cumpagni!
Di cu azzappa su’ ‘i campagni!
E li panzi d’e patruna
‘i spurtusamu ch’i furcuna

Èunu mi chiamu
Cu è unu cunta unu
Omu liberu nascivu
E liberu murivu
Ni li cruci su’ i cumpagni
Di cu vinci su’ i campagni
Ma spezzari sti catini
Valsi ‘u sangu d’i me vini!

Chista è la Storia d’a Sicilia anni darrè
D’Èunu ‘u sciratu ca di schiavu si fa re
Ma pi’ cu è scacciatu Santi ‘n terra nun ci nn’è
Li spadi arrivaru e nn’ammazzaru quanti e gghiè
Èunu facisti un passu avanti e dui a n’arrè!

Èunu mi chiamu
Cu è unu cunta unu
Omu liberu nascivu
E liberu murivu
Ni li cruci su’ i cumpagni
Di cu vinci su’ i campagni
Ma spezzari sti catini
Valsi ‘u sangu d’i me vini!

Bio

Alessandro D’Andrea Calandra is a folk singer-songwriter from Agrigento, born on 23 November 1972. From a very young age, he became involved in music, playing drums in various local bands, mainly groups that covered Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, The Cure and other leading figures on the international rock scene. At the same time, he taught himself to play the piano, developing a broad and curious musical education.
His musical tastes range from Italian singer-songwriters to Anglo-Saxon folk-rock (Bob Dylan, Springsteen, ACDC, Black Sabbath, Genesis, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Coldplay) and classical music. This mosaic of influences converges in a personal style that combines Sicilian folk, poetic narration and a strong focus on the cultural memory of Trinacria.
Having moved to northern Italy over twenty years ago, he continues to cultivate his emotional bond with his homeland through writing in the Sicilian dialect, which he considers a living, powerful and contemporary language. In 2024, he released his first album, “Sicilia vacanti”, a collection of original songs that make up a musical fresco dedicated to the stories, legends and characters of Sicily.
Today, Alessandro D’Andrea Calandra is recognised as one of the most original voices in new Sicilian folk music, capable of intertwining tradition, civic engagement and contemporary sensibility.
