Ghost By The Break Of Day (lyrics only)
Suzie King 2025
V1:
Wherever you lay your weary head,
As the sun paints the evening sky,
Whether on silk sheets or a moss-covered bed
I’ll send whispers to drift down upon you like leaves
Chorus:
I’ll be long gone before the rising sun opens your eyes
And it erases the night sky away
There’ll be no footprints to trace
Nor promises made,
There’s no echoes left to chase
I’ll be a ghost by the break of day
V:2
The road behind is dust and dreams,
Before us the moonlight path
You’ll rise, I’ll fade, rest is only borrowed breath
I’ll be the shadow that slipped into the first light
Chorus:
I’ll be long gone before the rising sun opens your eyes
And it erases the night sky away
There’ll be no footprints to trace
Nor promises made,
There’s no echoes left to chase
I’ll be a ghost by the break of day
M8 – instrumental bridge
Chorus:
I’ll be long gone before the rising sun opens your eyes
And it erases the night sky away
There’ll be no footprints to trace
Nor promises made,
There’s no echoes left to chase
I’ll be a ghost by the break of day
I’ll be a ghost by the break of day
outro:
I’ll send whispers to drift down upon you, like leaves
I’ll be a ghost by the break of day

Bio
Susan King
I am a songwriter and musician who reluctantly sings. I spent 25 years as an eye doctor and when I retired I was given a ukulele. That was 12 years ago. I play a little piano, violin and most recently bagpipes – yikes! I began writing songs about 10 years ago and I became immediately obsessed. I enjoy the art of songwriting. Finding a phrase that can spark emotion is my “jam.” I have an eclectic style and enjoy writing songs in all genres but tend to lean into Indie Folk and Americana. I enjoy playing out with friends but I mostly depend on my husband and pup for feedback.
Cheers.

Comments:
The imagery is lovely and nature-inspired.
I didn’t really understand who the narrator was or who they were talking to. Try to plot out your story before you start writing the lyric so the listener will understand what story is being told. Listeners find it hard to emotionally connect to something they don’t fully understand.

I don’t usually respond to critiques because every opinion has value but the comment baffled me. This is written in the first person . The narrator is the person moving on. In this case dying although I purposely made it vague to also allow the listener to decide the meaning.
