2025 Competition Lyrics Entry:

Last Surprise by Jim Walsh

Lyrics

Last Surprise

Just in case I don’t make it
Thought I’d drop you a quick line
It’s not that I’m at all concerned
In fact, I’m feeling fine
But just around the next corner
Could be a cliff edge, who can tell?
I’m just making preparations
For the tolling bell

For life is what you’re given
It’s not all the things you want!
And of all the roads you’ve driven
This is the one you daunt
But you look into the dawning
And hope your sun will rise
But that’s life’s great contradiction
May be your last surprise!

Now, you may think that I’m maudlin
But that’s just not what I am
I’m juggling with a problem
Sand running through my hands!
And all the thoughts that I’m feeling
Are written in the cards.
Whilst the faceless one is dealing
From a suite of broken hearts

So, what was it you were asking?
Or what did you come to say?
Watch the motive that you’re masking
Dissolve into the light of day!
Or will the messenger of morning
Present the fateful news
Then leave the stage to gasps and moans
And light the slow burning fuse.

For life is what you’re given
It’s not all the things you want!
And of all the roads you’ve driven
This is the one you daunt.
But you look into the dawning.
And hope your sun will rise.
But that’s life’s great contradiction.
It may be your last surprise
May be your last surprise
May be your last surprise

Bio

I don’t have a bio, but I have been writing and playing for many years. I enjoy writing song lyrics in many different styles. Many of the lyrics have been set to my own music which is however limited. I am influenced by a wide variety of musical styles and artists.
I have set the song I am presenting to my own music but have decided to enter it here as lyrics only.
This particular song was inspired by a health issue and how I dealt with it in the form of a letter!
