2025 Competition Lyrics Entry:

Summer Holding Winter by David Stout

Lyrics

Summer Holding Winter

The light set down before them
on a table near a stream
where the forces curled around them
near an entrance to her dream
near the entrance to their dreams

and the one who spoke the loudest
was a way off in the trees
his voice a kind of liquid
speaking through the leaves
speaking through the leaves

those words have never left us
a tongue so old, we knew
our summers hold the winter
hold the other, holding you

The light slipped down upon them
In the clearing near a stream
where the winds could never touch them
near the entrance to her dream
near the entrance to their dreams

and the one who spoke the kindest
was above us in the trees
his voice a flow and flower
in the language of the bees
in the language of the bees

those words have never left us
a tongue so old, we knew
our summers hold the winter
hold the other, holding you
