I began writing lyrics in 1968 when I was asked by a well known writer to put words to a tune he had written. I had been a coffee house poet up till then, hanging out on the Sunset Strip back in those hippie days of yesterday. Called “Blues Town” that song became my first published work. Subsequently, I was bitten by the songwriting bug, and have spent the best part of 40 years pursuing the elusive muse and recorded success. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to have several songs recorded by country, gospel and pop artists. A couple of my songs have been used in TV shows and movies. I have also been lucky enough to have won a few major contests including the prestigious New York Songwriters Hall of Fame contest in 1985(see picture below). Songwriting is a craft. It takes not just inspiration, but, knowledge and tutelage to make it work. I have studied with some great songwriting teachers over the years, such as Al Kasha, Buddy Kaye and Jack Segal. Some of my co-writers have gone on to fame and fortune, including Allan Rich(“I Don’t Have The Heart”), and Gary Wright(“Dreamweaver”). Among the many artists who have recorded my songs are Janie Fricke(“Midnight Words”)Bobby Helms(“Somebody Wrong Is Looking Right”)and Dorsey Burnette(“Tennessee Hitman”). In the gospel field “Where Would I Be Without You” was recorded by The Northams. “Talk About Us” has been used on TV in “The Big Break” hosted by Natalie Cole. “I Can’t Quit Loving You” has had double success, being recorded by Johhny Penn and also used in the ’03 movie “Roads To Riches”. I continue to seek other avenues as outlets for those “other” songs that languish in boxes and on computer files. It has been a privilege to have worked with so many wonderful co-writers and publishers over the years. I hope to be doing this for the rest of my life.
