2025 Competition Lyrics Entry:

Conversations In A Crowd by Craig Elliott

Lyrics

I’ve never been that good of a Christian
But in spite of this, all my life
I have heard God’s voice
And that voice always did it’s best
To tell me right from wrong
The voice I hear ain’t always right
But mine was never strong

(Chorus)
And I ain’t good to make out
Conversations in a crowd
When the voice I wanna hear is soft
And the other ones are loud
So now I’m asking to be left alone;
Because the voice that I should hear
Needs to be my own

I’ve always been someone’s doppelganger
And whenever someone else got wronged
That was my que to anger
But every word the voices said
has already been tried
The only thing that seems to work
is the Big Lie, oh

(Chorus)

(Instrumental Break)

Today I try to write a song
That ain’t been sung before
I’m closing up my curtains
And the deadbolt on the door
And I feel this liberation shoot
like lightning through my veins
Even though I am a prisoner
Of this head around my brain

(Chorus)

Bio

A former member of Remote Control, and a Ghostwriter for other musicians such as Tom Waits, Craig Elliott was driven to despair by his own perfectionism, and had to take a good, long break… and get to know himself better. He is now more confident as a solo artist, but he takes his craft too seriously to ever be considered as a prospect by major labels… or, maybe, for him to ever consider THEM. He has long been a fan of New Wave music, and often times his voice is compared to Depeche Mode. His song “This Is My Life” spent time making the airwaves in the UK, and was featured on the TV series “Fame UK”. It has also seen new life after being rehashed by other artists, such as Buck 22, who completely re-worked it for the series. Other works he is known for is the bafflingly controversial song “So Powerful”, which got parents up in arms when they mistakenly assumed the song was about drugs (It’s about music) and the more popular “Open Yourself”. More recently, his song “Won’t Sleep Tonight” made it onto a compilation CD that was released in Germany, called “Electropop”. All these songs so far were released while he and his producer Tomas “Dr. Octavo” Brabec were operating under the moniker Remote Control, and although this music is basically Pop, Elliott doesn’t consider himself a pop artist today, having graduated to moody New Wave like Tears For Fears and The Cure, and effervescent Trance that is, so far, completely unique.
