Lyrics
I got a clock with no hands upon it;
I got a sun that won’t cross the sky;
I got a calendar that’s stuck on October
And the leaves keep falling from on high;
I got a mouth that wants to be a poet;
I got a heart that wants to put you in rhymes;
I got a body wants to write a sonnet on your body,
But the muse, like you’s been gone a long time.
Chorus:
How come my guitar ain’t got no one to play for no more?
How come my love songs never rhyme?
How come I’m sitting here writing melodies, alone, pretending you’re still with me,
And that time’s still time?
I got a phone that won’t stop not ringing;
A door that won’t stop not getting knocked on;
It’s like a novel that I just can’t finish
No climax, no denouement.
I got a bed that won’t stop being empty.
Chair at my table just won’t be filled.
Your favorite bottle and the ice to chill it.
But I got no one to drink it with.
How come my guitar ain’t got no one to play for no more?
How come my love songs never rhyme?
How come I’m sitting here writing melodies, alone, pretending you’re still with me,
And that time’s still time?
Bridge:
No past no future,
Just this goddamn moment sitting here all alone.
I never knew that life could just stop.
But apparently yesterday was all a lie,
And tomorrow’s just not coming.
So the only one real thing in my life right now, is now,
And now you’re gone.
How come my guitar ain’t got no one to play for no more?
How come my love songs never rhyme?
How come I’m sitting here writing melodies, alone, pretending you’re still with me,

Comments:
The “I got a bed” verse is my favourite, it’s so descriptive and each line expresses the absence of her in a different way.
I would use the bridge to put a different angle on the story, saying why she left or what you’re going to do with your future.
