Cottonwood Sunday by Claire Levine

Lyrics

Wind shakes snow from the cottonwood trees
Filling the summery sky
Standing alone in the heat of the day
Thoughts of your presence float by
As I wave away the tumbling seeds
I hear your deep laugh as they fall
I remember us holding hands
Beneath the cottonwood trees.

One moment in my life
One picture that I keep
Once we stood together
Fingers entwined
Under sweet frosting that fell
From the cottonwood trees

I wish I ran free like the river I see
Rolling and coasting along
Racing a kingfisher high above me
With his wings just as strong as his song
But I stand on this bank and my feet will not move
Though my soul longs to follow the sun
The memory of you holds me here
Beneath the cottonwood trees.

One moment in my life
One picture that I keep
Once we stood together
Fingers entwined
Under sweet frosting that fell
From the cottonwood trees

Maybe it’s time to let go of this place
Where the white clouds collect on the ground
Move far away from this riverside grace
With the breeze and its rustling sounds
Pull up my roots, turn my face to the light
Leave your image and soft words behind
Tucked here in the shade
Beneath the cottonwood trees.
