Nine Digits Six Seconds
(Verse One)
St. Patty’s Day, a midtown pub,
Is when she first appeared
In a Kelly-green sweater
And green bow in her hair
Courage to approach surfaced
After four green beers
She shared a warm hello
Calming all my fears
Though she was a stranger
No need to take it slow
We sang along to Danny Boy
As though I seemed to know
This was someone special
The fated meant to be
Elated, I later learned
She felt the same of me
Our courtship was rapid fire
We sprinted to the alter
Then a year of romantic bliss
And lovestruck laughter
Our second year a new bliss
The arrival of a daughter
I hit the road working hard
To be a worthy provider
(Lift)
The days of young love
Were fast dismissed
Temptation surfaced
On many business trips
My pocket holds a cell phone
With a number for a tryst
And a wallet with a picture
Of a family that I miss
(Chorus)
With ten digits on my cell
An escapade awaits
Will I hit speed dial
Or will I tempt fate?
Nine extra digits
Six seconds is all it takes
(Verse Two)
Two years later
Birth of a baby boy
More days on the road
More diapers and toys
There’s a simpler world
On the road, free of family
But after check-in and a swim
The nights are lonely . . .
Til I met travelers
With evenings just as dim
(Lift)
Loneliness feeds temptation
On many business trips
I worry the time will come
When I can’t resist
My pocket holds a cell phone
With a number for a tryst
And a wallet with a picture
Of a family that I miss
(Chorus)
With ten digits on my cell
An escapade awaits
Will I still hit speed dial
Or will I tempt fate?
Nine extra digits
Six seconds is all it takes
(Outro)
Nights of dance and romance
Are now in our past
Children’s hugs and laughter
Now the joys I long to last
And a wife that’s a partner
Not a trophy on a date
Nine digits six seconds
Where pleasure evaporates
I press speed dial
Lasting love awaits
