White Horses by Barbara Burgess

Lyrics

In the bar by the sea were some people I’ve known.
‘Twas much better there than drinking alone.
They bought me a beer and whisky shot,
and after that first drink I just could not stop.

As the evening rolled on I became worse for wear.
Then I noticed a painting behind the bar there.
‘Twas a beautiful girl, she’d a smile on her face,
and long golden hair and angel-like grace.

Soon my head started spinning, I fell to the floor.
The barman came over, ‘you’ll not have no more.’
He hoisted me up, and threw me outside,
‘Keep away from the shore and the incoming tide.’

Well the wind started howling and the sea mist came in.
I could swear there was someone a me following.
I turned all around and whispered, ‘who’s there?’
‘Twas a beautiful girl with long golden hair.

Well she danced and she twirled with bare feet in the sand,
and she beckoned me onward with a wave of her hand.
I stepped into the sea, and followed her there.
That beautiful girl with the long golden hair.

Then a swell caught my legs and the tide pulled me down,
and beneath the white horses I thought I would drown.
Felt a tug at my shirt and a hand catch me there.
‘Twas the beautiful girl with the long golden hair.

Then she hauled me and dragged me right up the sea shore.
but when I opened my eyes I could see her no more.
Many folks gathered round and they all did stare,
as I cried for the girl with the long golden hair.

Well I asked many people the very next day,
Who was it saved me, but no-one would say.
Please hear me out now, all you men beware,
of the tide and the girl with the long golden hair.
