Under Paris Skies
Thanks Ian for challenging me!
Having been bottom of the class in history for most of my school life, I struggled to find a subject to tackle.
But in the end, I had to write about someone who holds a special place in my heart. My song is about the tragic silent movie star, Olive Thomas.
After winning New York’s ‘Most Beautiful Woman’ competition, Olive became one of America’s most famous and loved actresses.
She was far from perfect and liked to party – which resulted in her accidentally swallowing poison whilst under the influence of drink/drugs at the Paris Ritz in September 1920. There were lots of conspiracy theories, but the autopsy judged ‘accidental death’.
I love that she was so feisty and ambitious. She believed women could do the same jobs as men (and probably better) and proved it in steering her own career.
Olive and her story are sadly getting lost in time, and I’m secretly in love with this beautiful, but imperfect lady…. hence the song!
Here’s the lyrics :
UNDER THE SKIES OF PARIS
YOU SLIPPED AWAY AND LEFT THE WORLD TO MOURN
HE SAT BESIDE YOU IN THOSE CLOSING DAYS
A GUILT THAT BEGGED FOR GOD TO CHANGE THE PAGE
FORGIVE THE FOOLISHNESS WHICH WATCHED YOU SLOWLY DIE
UNDER A PARIS SKY
UNDER THE SKIES OF PARIS
HOW YOU LOVED TO DANCE THE HOURS AWAY
INTOXICATED BY MID AFTERNOON
MOVING NAKED IN A MIDNIGHT MOON
ETERNAL BEAUTY IS A SAD AND LONELY GUISE
UNDER PARIS SKIES
THERE WILL ALWAYS BE REMINDERS
IN HER BLACK AND WHITE LEGACY
ONLY THOSE EYES KNOW ALL THE SECRETS
COULD THAT BE WHAT FASCINATES ME?
A VERSION OF HISTORY
A MODERN LADY FROM A BYGONE TIME
AMBITIOUS, SELFISH, NOUVEAU MIND
I WISH THAT I COULD GO BACK IN TIME
AND FIND OUT WHY
UNDER THE SKIES OF PARIS
THE HOTEL WALLS STILL STAND IN MUTE RESPECT
YOUR SPIRIT HAUNTS THE STREETS YOUR FEET ONCE TROD
A SILENT ECHO OF A VOICE TO GOD
A HUNDRED YEARS AND STILL NO PROOF OF TRUTH OR LIE
UNDER A PARIS SKY
