Timber And Stone

My first go at a monthly challenge! This is a song inspired by a painting of an old, sooty derelict building that I have entered in this year's Liverpool Acoustic Song Writing Competition, and secrets it could it reveal to the protagonist that once worked or lived or visited it?
So, you’re still here / in that long black coat / with pockets full of notes / left by ghosts / Could you tell me what they wrote?
Timber and stone / Now exhausted and gaunt / has provided a home / for the known and unknown
So, you stand alone / and you squint at the sun / now your compadres have gone. / Can you hang on and give me the answers I want
Timber and stone / Now exhausted and gaunt / has provided a home / for the known and unknown
Oh, that black coat / it’s showing its age / seams are all frayed / like tempers that day / when tears were blinked away
Did the best man lose? How did she choose? Did your clerks put it down in the ledger?
Timber and stone / Now exhausted and gaunt / has provided a home / for the known and unknown. / It's time to atone

  1. Like Simon says, this has a lot of atmosphere to it, particularly as your performance is understated and almost confessional. I like the way you get maximum bang for your buck with the imperfect lyric rhymes such as coat, notes and ghosts. You say this is you first monthly challenge – good luck, look forward to hearing your song next time. Cheers.
