The Seagull and the Wind

The Seagull and the Wind (Inspired by Jonathan Livingston Seagull)

Said Seagull to Wind,
“Will you carry me
Far beyond the distant sea shore;
Beyond the hazy horizons,
Beyond the wild ocean’s roar?”

Said Wind to Seagull
“I will carry you.
Prepare your pinions to fly.
We will forge our forces together
As we travel beyond morning’s sky.

Chorus
You will know as you soar in the sky
And gaze down as the old world turns slowly by
There is more to this living,
Much more to this living
Than meets the eye, than meets the eye.”

Said Seagull to Wind
“I will learn from you
You are older and wiser than I,
Understand the urge to discover,
To consider the reasons why.”

Said Wind to Seagull
“The answers
Are found as you trust in your wings
To carry you far beyond dreaming
To the freedom that flying will bring.

Chorus
You will know as you soar in the sky
And gaze down as the old world turns slowly by
There is more to this living,
So much more to this living
Than meets the eye,
Than meets the eye.”

M8
We are reason; we are rhyme
As we tangle & we twine
I am your cradle as we climb.

Chorus
You will know as you soar in the sky
And gaze down as this old world turns slowly by
There is more to this living,
So much more to this living
Than meets the eye,
Than meets the eye.

  1. What a beautiful song, can see the seagull flying out over the ocean horizon. My sister was absolutely obsessed with that book. I think I still have it somewhere – going to have to read it while listening!

  2. Must admit I’ve never read Jonathan Livingstone Seagull (wasnt there a film? I missed it). However, I share your love of birds, and have max respect for seagulls, and no time for people who moan about them stealing their chips! As Lathen says – your voice soars like a seagull on the wings of the wind, and (if I am hearing it right) the bird and the wind have a symbiotic relationship. Great stuff, as ever.

  3. Thank you all so much for your comments. Although I dislike challenges and competitions, without them, and without your encouragement, I doubt I’d have the impetus to organise my chaotic mind enough to write anything. Now ai find I’m excited every month to know what the next challenge will be, regardless of the vote. Which all goes to show that you’re never too old to learn and grow. Xx

  4. Thank you fort your kind and encouraging comments, one and all. This little song has taught me a lot. I’ve not been in the best of places this month but I feel a very precious freedom when I sing. Listening to the wide variety of songs entered has been a joy and I’ve found comfort and learned lessons through doing so. You are a talented, beautiful band of souls. 🕊️

  5. What a lovely song. The melody and music put me in the mindset of a seagull gliding peacefully on the wind. I loved the metaphorical lyrics that you sprinkled in (e.g. “I am your cradle as we climb”)

  6. Thank you for listening, Richard. I’m so pleased you like the “cradle” metaphor.. I’ve been encouraged by so many people to start singing again & begin songwriting. They’ve become a sort of “cradle”. What I’m learning now is to trust in my own wings.
