Start Again
Firstly, congratulations once more to @Rebecca Richards on winning last months’ #LoveChallenge.
This is my effort for Rebecca’s #ChordChallenge and it’s called ‘Start Again’ which is pretty apt as I have tried many different ways to work on this and structure it into some sort of song.
After I arrived at what I thought was a reasonable chord pattern I couldn’t think of any lyrics, then just as I was thinking of turning in for the night and leaving it until the next day, the chorus came to me, so I hastily scribbled that down and then decided to write the song around that although still not having much of an idea of a subject matter.
In the end, I opted on writing about writer’s block.
The result is some moodyish verses then chorus to hopefully lift it from the darkness.
This, to me, has been a great challenge. Diolch Bec!
Chords and lyrics in comments
Intro:
Bm7b5/G6/x3 /C/Csus4/C
Verse:
As Intro x2 (with C7 at the end)
Chorus:
F/G/C (with bass note run down)/F/G/C/C7
F/G/C/Caug5/Am/C7/F/G/C/Csus4/C
Middle 8:
Dm/A/Dm/A/Dm/A/Bm7b5/A7
Verse
Sitting with a pencil poised
Waiting for a phrase to come
Looking for some inspiration
But there’s none
Staring through the window pane
Hoping there’ll be something to see
Nothing but a grey old day
Coming back at me
Chorus
So when the night draws in
And you’re waiting for tomorrow
And you dream of sunshine all the way
And when you wake and see the sun that’s shining through your window
You know it’s time to rise and start again
Verse
Maybe when tomorrow comes
Things will take a different turn
Juices will begin to flow
On another day
A little phrase can hit the mark
A tiny word that’s thrown away
A picture to ignite the spark
And here we go again
Chorus
So when the night draws in
And you’re waiting for tomorrow
And you dream of sunshine all the way
And when you wake and see the sun that’s shining through your window
You know it’s time to rise and start again
M8
Time to turn the brain to pause
And shut down for the day
Take a chance tomorrow brings
Something you can relay
Verse
They say tomorrow never comes
They say it’s just a new today
Just looking from a new perspective
Can help you find your way
Chorus
So when the night draws in
And you’re waiting for tomorrow
And you dream of sunshine all the way
And when you wake and see the sun that’s shining through your window
You know it’s time to rise and start again
You know it’s time to rise and start again
I can relate to your lyrics, particularly with the way things are at the moment. A great performance. Bravo!!
Thank you Jose. Appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment
Blooming heck, mate – you know a lot of chords! I always like what you do, but this is probably my favourite song of yours that I’ve heard. It really rocks and is catchy as Hell. Lyrically, it reminds me a bit of Peter Hammill of VDGG: introspective, questioning, although you end on an upbeat thought, which Mr Hammill tends not to do. ‘On another day A little phrase can hit the mark A tiny word that’s thrown away A picture to ignite the spark’ is a great line. Great stuff, Huw.
Cheers Phil. Appreciate it
Your writer’s block has actually generated a great song. Very listenable, relatable and enjoyable, and one of your best, Huw.
Thanks Paul. It’s really strange that not being able to think about something has actually generated an end product
Lovely performance of a very catchy song
Cheers Andy. Appreciate it
Good one – nice and earwormy !
Thank you Kris
Huw, I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish. Rise and start again is something I’ll be doing in a couple of days when they let me off the cardio ward. Nothing too serious just an annoying tachycardia.
Huw, I don’t know anything about chords or playing the guitar, but I do know a catchy tune and fun lyrics. For me, this hit the mark. Very enjoyable. Ian Sacks
Ian Ball. Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed it and get well soon mate
Ian Sacks. Thank you so much. Gkad it struck a chord with you (pun intended. I’ll get my coat)
As I said on FB Huw, this is my favourite of yours. Love love loved the vocal performance !!
Thank you Julie. I must say that your vocal warm ups helped with my vocal range and breathing technique
Great response to the challenge Huw. I want to rock out with you on that chorus which really lifts above the verse. Fab stuff, look forward to hearing this live.
Loved this Huw, felt like I was in the 60s again! Great tune! Keeper, I reckon.
Definitely my favourite song of yours and well performed (the guitar sounds great). I’m off to listen again.
Nice one, good catchy rhythm and lyric
Thank you @Ian Middleton. 60’s weren’t bad were they
Cheers @Mel Reeves. Pleased it struck a chord with you
Many thanks @Jayne Ingles. Glad you enjoyed it
What a hope-filled song and a great sound too, Huw. You used the chord shifts to great effect and I know the theme and tune will be stuck in my head the rest of the day. I loved your bacon butty song but I must admit this is my new favourite too 🤩🎶!
Whoever your stylist is, Huw, they’re spot on with that hat!! 😉💜
An excellent take on the theme Huw. Really enjoyed listening 🎶
Thank you @Suzanne and @Cath. Glad you both enjoyed it
One of the best Huw
Cheers @Alan White.
