Shape Shift Kaleidoscope

A song about those nightmares where you are in a passageway trying to find your way to somewhere, but the building keeps reconfiguring around you….

Lyrics:

I was so sure that I came in thru the door to my left The one that leads from the living room
Out to the passage down the long dark barrel Of the telescope shape shift kaleidoscope
This is a bad dream so abandon hope

I have been trapped here since yesterday Wrapped in my dressing gown
I think that my eyes will be flickering But everything else will be still

I was so sure that I came in thru the door to my left The one that leads from the living room
Out to the passage down the long dark barrel Of the telescope shape shift kaleidoscope
This is a bad dream so abandon hope

Caught in the teeth of the minotaur I have to be somewhere
But clearly this building has eaten me I am tasting the fear in my throat

And I am moving consistently, but the map is broken and everything changes from moment to moment
The walls are circling round me like wolves

I was so sure that I came in thru the door to my left The one that leads from the living room
Out to the passage down the long dark barrel Of the telescope shape shift kaleidoscope
This is a bad dream so abandon hope

  1. Weird – it doesn’t play on my desktop PC but does on my phone. hmmm. Not sure if the vid is at fault or just my PC. Apologies if all you see is a buffering circle…

  2. ah – seems there is some weird bug where if you are logged into youtube on a device then you can’t watch any of your own videos via links. All is well after all

  3. Kris, I really enjoyed your entry for this months competition, thank you for posting. Your voice is very alluring and haunty which works for me. Lovely simple but rhymical and fluid guitar which was well executed while singing. I would consider from my personal perspective your song to be, ‘Real’… …I’ll connect and listen to more of your work as time passes. Good job Kris…

  4. Thanks Terry and Charlie. The arrangement is really bugging me though – its my comfort zone default thing – bah – I need to work hard on climbing out of my rut. Its nice enough – but not for every flaming song. Ah well – onward and upward….

  5. Hi Kris, just an idea to share in regards to your comfort zone rut. I use this technique almost daily but always when I get myself stuck lol. De-tune whatever your playing instrument wise and just begin tuning upwards slowly until you get an ‘open’ chord, note, sound that you can play just with one extended finger across most or some of the frets. It’s got to sound good even open when you aren’t fingering the frets and if you go up and down the fret board just with that one extended finger, you’ll find where it works and where it doesn’t for you at that moment. You’ll find the tuning will facilitate you having to play and think differently about any new song you write on that de-tuned instrument. Just a sharing but might be a good start… …let me know if you have success as I’d be interested to know what can happen as you’re the first person I’ve ever suggested my technique to! Basically, you’re my Guinee pig in the nicest sense of personal experimentation lol. Seriously, have a go I think you’ll be amazed at what it opens up for you as a very talented singer songwriter already! Keep us posted…

  6. You always have such a cool, mysterious vibe in your songs. And I really love that your take on challenges was the literal passages of our nightmares, which are such a common theme in dreams. Your opening line immediately brings the listener into the “action” and the confusion of a dreamscape. Terry’s idea is a great one. I forgot that I used to do that D and E tunings and loved the freedom. Can’t wait for your next song.

  7. Your uniqueness of style shining through again. I love how you’ve interpreted the challenge, I’ve certainly been stuck in one of those passages nightmares! I like the added details – like being in your dressing gown.

  8. I’m listening to this & finding myself thinking of Kate Bush. Your style is always intriguing. I started a song for the challenge with the working title of “Maze of My Mind” & then too much happened in April for me to finish it. Oddly, it mentions the Minotaur ! Well done for creating another cracking song.
