Refugees

Many congratulations to Char on winning last month's challenge and setting the thought provoking challenge of Passages for this month.
With the atrocities in the Ukraine being at the forefront of this time, my interpretation of Passages is to base it on the corridors of exits for the Ukrainian people.

  1. They tramp along their weary way
    Possessions they have none
    Forced to seek another life
    Until the war is done
A passage to a safer place
Is all that they can crave
A race to flee oppressive ones
    To cheat an early grave

    Freedom’s all the people want
    A passage to release
Some hope for all their little ones
To live a life in peace

    Leaving all they know behind
    Dodging all the shells
    Racing to the borderline
    Escaping from war’s hell
    Leave their homes and family
    To find another world
All because they want to save
    Their little boys and girls

    A passage through the mountains
    A passage over seas
A route to flee the tyrants
In an effort to be free
The passages are few and far
    Away from battle’s scars
Where people need to know they’ll be Recieved with open arms

    Freedom’s all the people want
    A passage to release
Some hope for all their little ones
To live a life in peace
    Freedom’s all the people want
    A passage to release
Some hope for all their little ones
To live a life in peace

They tramp along their weary way
    Possessions they have none
    Forced to seek another life
    Until the war is done

  2. Nice one Huw; this is clearly a very important topic at the moment (and indeed at most times, too, sadly) and you perfectly sum up the emotions these poor souls must be feeling. The black and white video adds to the atmosphere. The only other song about refugees I know is by the mighty Van Der Graaf Generator. By the way, on a more prosaic note, love the Argus t-shirt, it has always been one of my favourite albums. Cheers.

  3. Thanks Phil. It is a very important topic and the only thing I can personally do about it is write a song.
Argus is also one of my all time favourite albums. Cheers

  4. Thanks Bec. It is such a heartbreaking sight to see people abandoning their homes and belongings. There’s not that much as an aging musician that I can do about it other than write a song to try and highlight the situation

  5. It would take a heart of stone not to be moved by the reports & images we’ve seen recently, Huw. You express your feelings so emotively through your song. Let’s hope there’s peace before too long.
