Raise Your Glasses
A song about beginnings and endings
#departuresandarrivalschallenge
Firstly, congratulations to Alan White and Steve Strawhead for being joint winners of the website respectful rant challenge and Suzanne Harper for winning the facebook poll.
When I saw the results and the topic of new challenge, I was led on a sunbed in Corfu and actually wrote 2 sets of lyrics in an attempt to cover this month's challenge.
I posted this on the facebook page a couple of days ago, but wasn't sure if I'd be entering it into this month's 'competition' or trying to finish the other one and see which one to go with (if either).
However, I have now decided to enter this one.
As I was on holiday when I wrote the lyrics, I have worn my sunhat in the video as I didn't think it fair to include photos of me on a sunbed. After all, I don't want any unfair advantage 😉
Anyway, this song is called 'Raise Your Glasses'
A baby cries out it’s a new begining
A sign of hope for something new
The voice a symbol of a generation
A beam of light that’s shining through
The school bell sounds another chapter opens
A time to learn a thing or two
To make connections and get friendships started
As they can last a whole life through
So raise your glasses to the new arrivals
Wish them well in all they do
Give some thanks to those who came before them
Sing a song about them too
Go to work adapt to new surroundings
Time to play a different game
Raise a family see your new horizons
And start the process off again
So raise your glasses to the new arrivals
Wish them well in all they do
Give some thanks to those who came before them
Sing a song about them too
A light goes out another lifetime passes
But just make sure that all that’s done
Will leave some smiles upon the broken hearted
Of memories of all that’s gone
So raise your glasses to the now departed
Thank them all for what they’ve done
Sing a song to those about to stumble
Into a life that’s just begun
Hi Huw, a positive song that meets really meets the brief for this month’s challenge, given you are talking about birth and death. Funnily enough, I am listening to this just after the Queen’s funeral and, although I am not a monarchist, you seem to have captured the zeitgiest perfectly. As ever, I love your guitar sound. Cheers.
Cheers Phil. I know we’ve had a coversation on facebook, but acknowledging your effort in putting the comment on here as well.
You and I seem to have had similar trains of thought in our songs for this month, Huw. I’m calling “Fly high, my darlings” and you’re raising a glass. I really enjoyed the drive, performance sentiment in your song. ??
Lovely flowing song. This perfectly reflects the natural flow of life and the ever changing and eternal cycle of life. I loved the chord choices/progression and lyrics.

Thank you so much Louise
Gorgeous sounding guitar and chord choice, love the shift for the chorus. The full circle of life in a song. Fab stuff
great job Hugh
Cheers Scott
Thanks Bec. Might try it tonight
Love this Huw. Nice chord progressions. But anthemic I thought.
Thank you Ervin. Appreciate it
