“Number five to New York”

“Number five to New York” by Paul Edwards
This song was written a few years ago for a Festival of spoken word and music in Swansea, UK, put on by a friend of mine on the theme of the acclaimed poet Dylan Thomas with emphasis also on Dylan’s mother Florrie Thomas.
In the song Dylan relates his mother’s importance and influence on him… from the grave, of course, as they have both been gone for many decades.
Florrie lost a couple of babies but went on to bring up Dylan and his Sister Nancy. Florrie outlived her husband and both her children.
Dylan Thomas was born in Number five Cwmdonkin Drive, Swansea, UK and died in New York, USA in 1953.
“From this place of peace where my view is crystal clear, so much time has passed – still you feel you here.
You wrapped me in live stood strong for me when I was low, bluebell girl you waited til we were all safe to go.
Father, Nancy and me and all the souls never to be, we owe so much to you, it’s plain to see. You framed my ten bob note, held me deep in your heart; I always knew you thought of me … near and apart.
And Mother is the beginning, the source of all that flows, nature then nurture, loved ones grow and if I never said I love you Mam out loud I hope you know.
I am known as a man who wields sarcasm from my hand, but I have to state I know your sacrifice was planned.
You’d ask the sun to wipe its feet, strength in you I always knew, from Number five to New York you were with me through and through.
And Mother is the beginning, the source of all that flows, nature then nurture, loved ones grow and if I never said I love you Mam out loud I hope you know.
And Mother is the beginning, the source of all that flows, nature then nurture, loved ones grow and if I never said I love you Mam out loud I hope you know.”

  1. I think this song is lovely, particularly like the words “And Mother is the beginning, the source of all that flows, nature then nurture, loved ones grow and if I never said I love you Mam out loud I hope you know” – very moving and relatable.
