Next Goal Wins!

‘Next Goal Wins!’ is a song of happy memories of playing football with my friends whenever we could, and in particular the very distinct memories of golden summer of 1970 and pretending to be the Brazil side won the World Cup in Mexico!

We can be anywhere, We can be anyone,
On our field of dreams, and muddy knees.
Next goal wins. Then we’ll come in

Picking sides, Penalty prize
Wembley dip dip dips, The game when I scored six
That tackle when my jeans got ripped
All those footballs that we kicked
Next goal wins. Then we’ll come in

We can be anywhere, We can be anyone,
On our field of dreams, Summer 1970
Next goal wins. Then we’ll come in

By satellite from the Aztec stadium, We play our own world cup
On the ‘big pitch’ at the local park We are live from Mexico
I am David Coleman,
Gerson to Tostao, Carlos Alberto, Rivelino, Jairzinho , Pele!!! Goal!!!

When the posts / have gone back to being coats
And we get home / after dusk’s blown the final whistle
Dad’ll ask… Are there floodlights there now?
Again

Next goal wins. Then we’ll come in
Next goal wins. Then we’ll come in
Next goal wins. Then we’ll come in
Next goal wins. Then we’ll come in

Any ball And any wall S. P. O. T. SPOT!

  1. We never quite dream again as we did when we were young, do we? To play a game of football with your mates and, at the same time, be playing in the World Cup; a child’s imagination is a marvel. That’s the joy of your song for me. Thank you! Soccer ⚽️ 🥅

  2. Not being a sporty type, I never got really enthusiastic about a team, but you do capture that childhood dreaming effectively. Could I also say, I was picking up some Mark Knopfler in your singing style. Fab!

  3. Fantastic, I’m sure every kid has these memories of playing their favourite sport and being called home. Mine was football and cricket in the street, pausing play for every passing car. Thanks for putting those sweet memories back in my head.
