Messy Woman Blues
Messy Woman Blues
My mother tried her best
To make me tidy & neat
But my head was in the clouds
And a mile from my feet.
My mind was with the fairies
Fanciful & free,
What’s she gonna do
With a messy little woman like me?
And in the big wide world
I found some shiny things to play with.
Birds & bees & poetries
That I could spend the day with.
I soon found better use for time
Than occupied with dustin’ .
No one checks the décor
When you’re lovin’ and a- lustin’.
So leave me be.
These are the priorities I choose.
I’m singing the dancing-with-the-daisies, lazy, crazy
Messy Woman Blues.
I’m singing the leave-the-dustin’, let’s-keep-lustin’
Messy Woman Blues.
I’m not coordinating
My bedclothes with my undies
I’m not the kind of woman
Does her ironing on Sundays.
My routines are all ragged;
My systems are all shot.
I’m too old for pretending
That I’m something that I’m not.
I’m pleased that you like mowing
But don’t disrespect my grass.
I’m busy drinking Cava
And sitting on my…..deckchair…
I’m wild as the weeds
And as dizzy as a daisy.
I call it relaxing
Maybe you call it call lazy.
So leave me be;
These are the priorities I choose.
I’m singing the watching-while-the- grass-is-growing, leave-the-mowing
Messy woman blues
I’m singing the housework-hating, uncoordinating
Messy woman blues.
//Instrumental or whatever//
So leave me be.

This is really great – for me it iinvokes a cross between Lucinda Williams and Amy Rigby, if you are familiar with them, although you may be coming it more from a Joni perspective. Either way, it is a strong woman doing things her way. As ever the guitar playing and voice is spot on. The lyrics are just superb – rhyming dusting with lusting is brilliant. Cheers
Thank you,Phil. It was fun to try something a bit different & I’m pleased I could find a sort of bluesy/jazzy guitar accompaniment. I’ve definitely had to make decisions in the last year about priorities. We don’t live in squalor but if the washing up is left until the next morning, I’m not losing any sleep over it. ?
That was fun Suzanne. Somehow with your elegant and sophisticated “Look”, I find it difficult to believe you’re a MESSY WOMAN. I also enjoyed what we in the States call “Scattin”.
“I soon found better use for time
Than occupied with dustin’ .
No one checks the décor
When you’re lovin’ and a- lustin’.” My house is dusty but that´s ´cos it´s too hot for dusting (and lusting!) Love the song.
Ah, the look! Yes, it’s a thin veneer. People relax when they come to our house, which I love, but I’m no domestic goddess & our garden walks a narrow line between order & chaos. The scatting was just a filler because I’d have loved a sax or jazz violin there. A girl can dream! Thanks for listening. It was a fun diversion & makes me smile. ?
The dusting can always wait, Andy, but the lusting just requires a bit of air con or your feet in a bucket of cold water?. I’m so pleased you enjoyed the song. ?
Lovely! Gets my vote… great performance, as well 🙂
Thank you so much, Ian! If only someone had told me a couple of years ago when I started songwriting that my head would constantly be swimming with ideas. I’m away with the fairies most of the time anyway. ? ?♀️
Lyrically rich, full of catchy rhymes and nice bluesy chords. Good work Suzanne!
Thanks, Mike! I’ve never tried anything bluesy though I’ve often wanted to. I’m a beginner at all this and though a folk singer at heart, I enjoy all sorts of music. If it connects, I enjoy it. This was so much fun!
Brilliant Suzanne, there’s a touch of the Alison Moyet’s “All cried out” about it too. Loved it.
Alison Moyet would be the BEST company & “All Cried Out” is a brilliant song ! Love her voice. Thanks for listening, Kyle. ?
Just love it (see FB for more!) It’s got my vote!
Thank you, Paul! Your kind words of encouragement both here and on FB are much appreciated! ?
Got my vote. Girl after my own heart!
Thanks, Beverley! I’m not one for ranting, but as the song says, “I’m too old for pretending that I’m something that I’m not”!
Suzanne, a great tune and really clever lyrics! My wife strongly relates to this song and is adopting it as her anthem. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!
I’m glad I’m not alone, Alan! Thanks for listening. A very different style for me , which was fun. Thankfully my lovely man is pretty relaxed about my domestic shortcomings too. Life’s way too short!! Xx
