Made To Last
This is the nearest I will ever get to a love song! Basically, things that are made with love are better because of the time and effort that goes into making them. Same with a relation isn't it?
Made To Last
-1-
Our love is like a house in the country
Sure gets lonesome at times
Looks pretty in the sunshine
But I can see the danger signs
There’s gaps around the windows
And the doors don’t fit so tight
Paint is peeling
Cracks in the ceiling
But I know we can put it right
If it’s made with love, it’s made to last
If it’s made with love, it will still hold fast
-2-
Our love is like a car from the ‘50’s
Everybody stops and stares
They all think they’d like to own one
But have they got the time to spare?
‘cos to keep it looking shiny
Can be an awful chore
But we know we must
Keep it free from rust
Cos they don’t make ‘em like that anymore
If it’s made with love, it’s made to last
If it’s made with love, it will still hold fasy
-3-
Our love is like your favourite movie
One that’s stood the test of time
You know every scene now off by heart
And you can repeat most of the lines
Although it’s so familiar
It still makes you laugh and cry
You’ve watched it before
You’ll come back for more
And never need to ask yourself why
If it’s made with love, it’s made to last
If it’s made with love, it will still hold fast
-4-
Our love is like your best friend from schooldays
One that you don’t see so much
You don’t live near each other
But you know you’ll always keep in touch
If you find yourself in trouble
She’s the person you’d first turn to
You’ve been friends for ever
And you know you’ll never
Find someone who’s as special to you
If it’s made with love, it’s made to last
If it’s made with love, it will still hold fast
Outro
Our love is like a house in the country
Sure gets lonesome at times
Like that Phil some really neat metaphorical links which make it very relatable.
Those lyrics are really good. 👏👏
Hi Andy and James. Many thanks for the postive comments – as ever my lyrics are strong but the playing and presentation needs working on. Still, that will keep me out of mischief (probably). Cheers.
Excellent lyric Phil. Comparing the relationship with a house is genius mate. Well done
Many thanks, Huw. I’m a big fan of Texas songwiter Butch Hancock and I think I was influenced by him on this song. Cheers.
I enjoyed this one – especially verses 2 and 3 – they seemed especially relateable
Thanks for giving it a listen, Kris, I appreciate your comments. For me, verses 1&2 are my faves. I had one verse I didn’t use about favourite soap onTV, but I thought five verses would be overkill! Thanks, again.
Like others, I was really impressed by the analogies in the lyrics and how well they held together. Steady reggae-type beat too. Good song😁👏👏
Thanks, Heather, I appreciate your kind words. As ever, my lyrics seem good but I do need to work on the other aspects, particularly performance and production. Maybe I should make that a belated new year’s resolution, as I am cetainly not doing dry January! Thanks again.
Enjoyed the various comparisons of love to other analogies. Last line made me sad though. Tune in the chorus is an easy song along and memorable. Great stuff
I really like this Phil. I was intrigued to see what your love was going to be compared with in each verse (and seeing your previous comment, what the TV soap verse would have done).
An interesting different view love Phil!
Hi Rebecca, Thanks for the positive feedback, I didn’t mean to make you sad! However, I think this is quite a melancholy song, generally.
Hi Paul Here is the ‘missing’ verse. Given the verse about the movies I didn’t feel it added anything, so it was a case of either or. Editing songs is a funny old business!
Our love is like a soap on TV, One that seems to run and run, Though you take it for granted, You’ll be sad when it’s done, You can skip a bunch of episodes but still pick it up like new, It’s there til the end, Just like an old friend, That’s always there for you, If it’s made with love it’s made to last, If it’s made with love, it will still hold fast
Thanks Linda, I don’t think I could write a ‘proper’ love song, but this is the nearest I’ve got to one! Cheers.
What a great theme for your song, it has really well crafted lyrics. I really enjoyed the sentiments. I found myself nodding in agreement and then singing harmonies in the chorus!
Many thanks for giving it a listen, Julie, I wish you had sang harmonies on the actual recording, given that my voice isn’t brilliant! It was a fun one to write though, trying to think of different analogies for love. Thanks, again.
“If it’s made with love, it’s made to last” is such a memorable lyric, Phil. The analogies you make throughout are heartwarming and relatable. This is a well-founded love that’s stood the test of time.
Thanks, Suzanne. Sue and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary last year. Like any couple we’ve had our ups and downs (ups mainly, thankfully) so (and I’ve never thought of this until your comments jogged the old memory banks) maybe that is what inspired the song? Thanks again.
Another cracker Phil. Gets my vote.
Thanks, Cath – you guys got one from me, too; I love it when you two work together.
