Letter From A Million Years Past

A song that I have just finished, so as I had started it before the Challenge was set, I feel that I should submit as a ‘Catalogue’ song. The Title was given to me, as a challenge, by a friend when we were at the Chelsea Flower Show (it was the title of one of the Show Garden exhibits). I thought: what if someone was reading a letter from the very beginnings of a relationship when everything would have been full of optimism and promise, ignoring any doubts, only for reality to present a different outcome. I thought that it would qualify under the ‘disturb’ criteria as a ‘comforting’ early letter would lead to a discomforting outcome. Thanks for listening.
Lyrics:
VERSE 1:
Oh, I tried so hard,
I tried my best,
No-one could doubt me,
No-one ever loved you less,

No lovers voice,
I’m hearing just white noise,
Hearing the madness,
Of the pieces that were left,

CHORUS:
All of the the words that we forget,
Now that I’m reading,
A Letter From A Million Years Past,
A Letter From A Million Years Past,

VERSE 2:
Oh, those emerald eyes,
That light up the dark,
Fighting the fire,
The Fires that we start,

And words, never still,
Cold words that can kill,
Killing the spark, that
We thought would never die,

CHORUS:
All of the the words that we forget,
Now that I’m reading,
A Letter From A Million Years Past,

BRIDGE:
Painting our own picture,
Painting it was fun,
Planning growing old,
With a ring of gold,
And kisses to last all summer long,

Promising adventure,
Promising the earth,
Blind to the warnings of a diamond in the rough,

The good days and the bad become one,
Your leaving, is the final Coup de Grace,

CHORUS:
All of the the words that we forget,
Now that I’m reading,
A Letter From A Million Years Past,
A Letter From A Million Years Past,
A Letter From A Million Years,
Past.

  1. Nice guitar work and lovely to hear just voice and restrained instrumentation which makes the song front-and-centre. The images in the lyric are lovely and the song is nicely structured making it engaging at the first listen.
