Jason’s Tale

This is an adapted and live version of a song I wrote for the ‘Setting Sail’ challenge a few months ago. The story of Jason has been told many times in a lot of different forms, but originally in ‘Argonautica’ by Apollonius Rhodius (so Wikipedia tells me!)

  1. I didn’t want to be a hero, but I wasn’t free to choose
It’s not as if I could say no to Hera and to Zeus
My fate was in the lap of the gods, so there could be no release
And I was tasked with setting sail to bring back the Golden Fleece

I didn’t want to be a hero, you’ll be surprised to know
I never chose to sail the seas, I never chose to go
I just wanted to stay at home, and spend my life in peace
But I had to go off searching for this blessed Golden Fleece

I didn’t want to be a hero, unlike the rest of the crew
We called ourselves the Argonauts, fifty good men and true
Orpheus and Theseus, Castor and Heracles
So we set sail in the Argo to search for the Golden Fleece

I didn’t want to be a hero, but now I was undecided
As we landed our boat on Lemnos, where only women resided
But when we found out that they’d … killed their husbands, if you please
We quickly returned to the job of finding that Golden Fleece

I didn’t want to be a hero, but I was getting into the swing
Especially the altercation, with Amycus the King
There was a massive fist fight which the Argonauts won with ease
So we made a sharp exit, and soon got back to our search for the Golden Fleece

I didn’t want to be a hero, but to cut a long story short
We had lots more adventures, and we never once got caught
So I started to reckon that it was all a bit of a wheeze
Still it was quite a relief when we actually got hold of the Golden Fleece

I didn’t want to be a hero, I followed the Euterpean muse
And when I heard the Sirens sing, my heart was just confused
They lured us to the rocks, where at the very least
We’d be delayed in getting home with the precious Golden Fleece

I didn’t want to be a hero, but please don’t get me wrong
I was nearly as brave as some of the rest that I had brought along
So when we got home we celebrated with one big massive feast
But then, guess what, I didn’t even get to keep the Golden Fleece

  2. The ancient Greeks would be proud of this satirical retelling of the famous Argonaut. The style reminded me of some early 60’s anti war satire as well. Some nice intellectual picking and grinning going on here. Very cool!
