If I Never (Sing Another Song)

For the TisT 2023 competition, I decided to write 3 songs and to choose what I felt would be better to submit … each one replacing the previous in my thoughts of suitability. This was the first one … that I rejected, but which now allows me to submit it to the January Challenge!! I thought that I would try and write a song in a 'Classic American Songbook' style. It is a song about Love … unrequited, missed opportunities and lost. Thanks for Listening.
LYRICS:

VERSE 1:
If I never, sing another song,
If I never get to dance with you,
If I never get to hold your hand, or kiss, your lips at night,
Will this always be a fantasy,
Never knowing what you mean to me,
Never knowing how my heart was breaking when you say goodbye.

VERSE 2:
If I never, get to call your name,
Get to Hear you say, that you’ll, be mine,
Knowing love when I am in your arms, a look, I can’t disguise,
Will this always be our destiny,
Never knowing what you mean, to me,
Never knowing how my heart, was breaking when, you say goodbye.

VERSE 3:
Falling in love can be cool,
Falling in love can be cruel,
I’ll treat you right, stay home all night,
Even the passerby won’t tease me,
You’ll have me completely,
We learned to laugh,
We learned to cry,
We learned to love and we, we even learned to lie.

VERSE 4:
If I never, sing another song,
If I never get to dance with you,
If I never get to hold your hand, or kiss, your lips at night,
Will this always be a fantasy,
Never knowing what you mean to me,
Never knowing how my heart was breaking when you say goodbye.
Never knowing how my heart was breaking when you say goodbye.
Never knowing, How my heart,
Was breaking,
When, You, said,
Good – bye.

  1. Very different from the acoustic guitar led submissions that we’re so familiar with. I wanted to put my tuxedo on get out that old ribbon mike and pretend I was in a smoky Soho bar and sing along! Very well done.

  2. I can imagine this being sung in a cabaret bar; it’s got that easy, romantic feel to it. This could be slowed down with a deep female vocal too and some gentle piano and bass. Lots to play with.
