I Wouldn’t Mind

I‘ve never tried writing a country song before and I was floundering earlier in the month with nothing really forming. Thankfully I was able to make it to one of the songwriting workshops and came up with this simple little song. I hope it’s “country” enough for the #countrychllenge

I Wouldn’t Mind

There’s a sink full of dishes in the kitchen,
A pile of dirt & dust under our bed.
Cobwebs in the corners
Of the memories in my mind
And the mess that you left in my head.

And I know I’m a fool to still want you
After all of the pain you left behind.
To hear your key in the door
And your honey voice once more
Darlin’ , you know, I wouldn’t mind. X2

You could say the words to fill my heart with roses,
Balloons of foolish dreams filled our home,
But I watched the flowers die
And dreams drift to the sky
And this heartbroken woman left alone.

And I know I’m a fool to still want you
After all of the pain you left behind,
To hear your key in the door
And your honey voice once more
Darlin’ , you know, I wouldn’t mind. X2

Well you know we’re both too proud for begging
So I guess this is the way it has to be,
You out wandering somewhere
And me crying in this chair
Hanging on to a fading memory.

And I know I’m a fool to still want you
After all of the pain you left behind
To hear your key in the door
And your honey voice once more
Darlin’ , you know, I wouldn’t mind. X3

  1. Suzanne, this is great. As always with your songs, the emotion you express is palpable. It may not be your preferred genre, but you’ve stepped into it with apparent ease, without sinking into any of the usual country cliches. Lovely singing and playing, and for me this doesn’t need any more than the voice and acoustic guitar.

  2. Hiya, If this is the first country song you’ve written then I hope you write more. Great title, marvellous images, heartfelt performance. I am trying to think who it reminds me of, and I can’t pigeonhole it (which is a good thing) but there is something of the Nanci Griffith in it. Great job.

  3. Great tune and great lyric.
I heard “Crying on the stairs”
And thought what a great image.
And then I see the lyric is,
    “Crying on the chair”
I was a song doctor in another life.
If it were my song I would be crying on the stairs.
    Again
Great lyrics . You’ve got the golden touch.

  4. Hi The song doctor here.
You have a great line at the start of the song which is really what the song is about.
“Cobwebs of the corners in the memories of my mind”
    So
If it were my song I would change the title to
“In the Corner of my mind”
    So instead of
“Oh Darlin’ you know I wouldn’t mind”
    Song.
“Forever in the corner of my mind”
You have written a really great lyric and I just had these wee ideas to maybe make it the best it can be.

  5. This is so country it makes Tammy Wynette look like a rocker! That one person could pine for another after much less than acceptable treatment is the essence of whiskey guzzling country philosophers everywhere. To say good job is an understatement.

  6. Just Beautiful Suzanne. Lovely guitar playing and your voice is just lovely and supports and enhances the sentiment portrayed in the story, really something else. This needs to be on the country charts today.

  7. If I was runnin’ down the road tryin’ to loosen my load and Carly Simon came on the AM singin’ this song, it woulda just felt natural! And the rhymes: outside pair and inside pair: new form to me and wonderfully executed.
