Hiram Bingham

  1. Firstly I liked the name Hiram Bingham, for its sound, its alliteration. His name led me to his history, and so to the writing of my song. Being an academic who became an explorer, some think he was the inspiration for the fictional character, Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford in the film Raiders of the Lost Ark. Lost City of the Incas by Hiram Bingham tells of his discovery of the Inca city, Machu Picchu.
    Hiram Bingham
    Hiram Bingham was a scholar
    who wanted to explore
    worlds outside his study window,
    beyond his college door.
    Once he heard of Vilcabamba,
    was somewhere in Peru,
so he set off for the Andes,
    maybe the myth was true.
The lost city of the Incas
was what he sought to find.
    His guide was Melchor Arteaga,
so his steps were not blind.
    From the river Apurimac,
    he crossed the jungle line,
to the air paths of the condor,
    cut through bamboo and vine.
On the slopes stood ancient stone work,
half hid by moss and fern,
    walls of Inca Manco’s mansions,
    his heart began to burn.
    Happily Hiram Bingham
found more than was his dream.
    The remains of Vilcabamba
    was silver in the stream.
    Happily Hiram Bingham
    searched for Inca Manco’s mansions.

  2. Thank you very much for listening to my song. I am pleased that you think I did a good job with the lyrics. Other versions I have done of my song have been slower and longer, so I think I will leave it as it is.

  3. Thank you very much for listening to my song. I am glad you think the tale of Hiram Bingham’s expedition to the Andes in search of the Inca city was worth telling.
