Halcyon Days

Congrats and thankyou to Suzanne for the Setting Sail challenge which has been a life saver in what has been a difficult week. Music is such a great distraction. Struggling for an idea I thought about the word ‘halcyon’ and discovered that there’s a Greek myth about a kingfisher that makes it’s nest on the sea to calm the waters at Winter solstice, so have had a go at including it as a symbol of calming the mind and reassurance. It’s a song about remembering the good times and not fearing the future. I was just glad to have managed to write something this month, and have learned something new to boot! Any feedback much appreciated!

  1. This is great, Tracy, your voice is perfect, clear as a bell. The strumming on the guitar evokes rolling waves, and it is really catchy. No matter which, it’s a top song. Well done, as ever.

  2. I really like this Tracy, gorgeous. The guitar and voice and beautifully matched. To me there’s a hint of South America in the guitar sound, something I can’t quite put my finger on.

  3. Beautiful (again!) I love the little motif you have going in the bass, the rhythm of the strum is quite hypnotic, like waves. I love the shells no pearls line and the punctuation on those short lines really create a rich variation in the song. Nautical references didn’t feel heavy at all. I think Dave might mean he can only see your face and not the rest of you but I’m im guessing you wanted it that way. I had my eyes shut anyway (as I usually do when I’m listening) so it makes no difference to me 😀. Top job xx

  4. Thankyou for listening all the lovely feedback Ann, Phil, Mail, Andy S, Andy C, Ian, Bec (😂 that was funny!), Mark, John and Louise, it is much appreciated! x
I’m still listening to all the wonderful song entries!

  5. Thanks Maureen, here are the words: Overwhelming, navigating /This deep ocean/ buffeting waves.
Saw you crying/ in the darkness/ painting pictures in only Payne’s grey. / Choppy waters disturb your mind’s eye/ storms are brewing ahead all the time/ something always sails out of control/ listen to your heart and your soul.
Chorus: Sail out of the bay and ride the crest of the wave/ putting your faith in our halcyon days. //
Solstice, Winter/ the kingfisher/ takes to its nest/ calming rough seas./ New moon, lights sky/ changing the tide/ reall good times/ find your release/ We’ve been drifting no wind in our sails/ Found only shells when looking for pearls/ there’s an ocean of new ways to go/ listen to your heart and your soul/
Chorus rpt: Sail out of the bay and ride the crest of the wave/ putting your faith in our halcyon days.
Choppy waters disturb your mind’s eye/ storms are brewing ahead all the time/ pull up the anchor I’ll let go the rope/ don’t fight with the current and go with the flow.
Chorus: sail out of the bay and ride the crest of the wave/ putting your faith in our halcyon days rpt.

  6. Really good Tracy – as Rebecca says, hypnotic! Voice as clear as a bell. We need to get you on stage very soon!!! (and you slipped in ‘payne’s grey’ – this could become a thing

  7. I’m sorry you’ve been struggling with pain, Tracy, which only makes it more remarkable that you’ve created such an energetic, optimistic song. I found myself instantly wanting to join in and harmonise. I’m more than a bit emotional at the variety of songs this challenge has prompted & yours will definitely be one that remains with me 😘🎶🌊.
