Free To Be Me

It’s a few years since my retirement, but I only wrote this yesterday! I still remember the sense of freedom that I felt that day. I’m hoping that anyone with a background in education will be able to relate to it. Congratulations to Tracy Dillon on winning last month’s challenge, and thanks for this month’s theme.

  1. No more taking those early morning calls /
I won’t be held accountable at all /
No performance reviews, no targets to agree /
No plans for improvement, that’s it for me /
    Cos I’m free, finally I’m free /

No more filling in pointless questionnaires /
I won’t need to have eyes everywhere /
I’ve crossed my fingers, I’ve touched a lot of wood /
    I did my best, that’s all I could /
Now I’m free, and that’s all that matters to me /

    Sorting out everyone’s problems /
Breaking up all of the fights /
First to arrive, last to leave /
Why did I choose this life? /

No new systems that I will have to learn /
None of that nonsense will be my concern /
No initiatives I’ll have to follow /
The rest of my life begins tomorrow /
Cos I’m free, free to be me /

With policies coming out of my ears /
I’m here from morning to night /
First to arrive, last to leave /
Why on earth did I choose this life? /

I won’t be taking those early morning calls /
I won’t be held accountable at all /
No initiatives I’ll have to follow /
The rest of my life begins tomorrow /
    Cos I’m free, yes I’m free /
    Finally I’m free /
    Free to be me

  2. I’ve never worked in education, but I know folks that have, and I am sure they could relate to this. Sounds like you had fun puttting this together. As ever, your guitar playing reminds me I’ve got a long way to go! Cheers.

  3. This song made me smile. My Mum was a teacher all of her life, my son did “Teach for America” for a few years after college and my wife was a substitute teacher, so I know how difficult the job can be. I loved the delightful hint of cheekiness and the fun vibe that the song had. Well done!
