First Love
Here’s a little song that started out as a nameless waltz on the Melodeon about 3 years ago. I started adding words and it slowly evolved into this song in the middle of last year which in when I recorded this rough idea.
I imagined it been sung in a smoky Parisienne café by a 1940s ‘torch’ singer.
Had to sync the video to the recording, a bit off in places, and had a little fun with the free video editing software I use.
I don’t speak French, but spent some time with a dictionary and Google translate.
I’ve changed the title to ‘First Love’ after a comment from Heather Curry on the Facebook page.
Falling in love is easy they say,
When you’re young you can fall in love everyday
Years pass you by, new loves come your way
But your first love will always stay.
Falling in love is simple indeed
Just a glance, in a room, is all it will need
Once love is sown then you will know
It will root in your heart and grow.
Though your first love may hurt you, It will never desert you
It will live in your heart to your dying day.
You will always remember, from March to December
That first love you gave away
You can never expect it, you may sometimes regret it
It can creep up as you look the other way
You must always embrace it, just stand up and face it
The love that will come your way
Falling in love is foolish they say
It is love keeps the world spinning every day
Toujours l’amour grandira dans votre cœur
L’amour que tu n’oublieras jamais
Though your first love may hurt you, It will never desert you
It will live in your heart to your dying day.
You will always remember, from March to December
L’amour que tu n’oublieras jamais
L’amour que tu n’oublieras jamais
That first love you gave away

Thanks Karen, glad you liked it.
Great song and performance!
Really lovely tune and set of words. The melodeon and the inclusion of a French lyric certainly make it stand out from the crowd. Well done Ian!
Thanks Paul, it was fun to add the Français. I just hope there aren’t too many schoolboy errors in there!
Thanks James, glad you enjoyed it.

Lovely tribute to the first love. Enjoyed the rather hypnotic guitar and the melodeon I’d lovely.
Thanks Rebecca
Comments on Facebook. I love the story telling and talky bit! 👏
A treasure of a song, Ian; there are definitely echoes of courtly love, and the arrangement is beautiful. The addition of French touched this old modern languages teacher’s heart.
😊💜.
I keep gravitating back to your song. Very nice. I like that you included the accordion and the short instrumental section which was very well done.
I can imagine this in a period film…lovely!
Definate nod to Courtly love and songs..Henry V111 etc…love the accordian , came as a surprise. Very evocative altogether. It’s a Yes from me .
Absolutely beautiful. The song flowed beautifully. Lyrics really embodied the experience of first love from advancing years. Beautiful melody and I enjoyed the French phrasing too. One to be proud of.
Thanks Paul, Linda, Geraldine, Louise, Suzanne and Heather. Glad you liked it, it’s appreciated that you have taken the time to comment.
A really interesting Anglo-french folk fusion. Really well performed and keep playing with the video software.
Thanks Bernard, I shall!
Just lovely troubador/madrigal feel – timeless like Greensleeves.
Thanks Michael
