Embleton Bay
My family lived in Embleton on the Northumberland coast when I was six and my brother was nine. I remember our time there as one of innocence, beauty and kindness. I visited Embleton Bay earlier this year for a few brief moments and it seemed as if time had stood still. “ We are children forever on Embleton Bay”.
Verse 1
In a heartbeat I’m standing on memory’s sand
As the grains of the years trickle down through my hand
Rock pools and razor shells
Treasures of time
And a soundtrack of seagulls on the shores of my mind
PC
An easterly wind, sea salt & spray
Carry me back to Embleton Bay
Chorus
Embleton Bay, Embleton Bay
We are children forever
On Embleton Bay
Verse2
Starfish & seashells, driftwood & dunes,
The wind through the marram
Sings its whispering tunes
As the waves kiss our toes
The wind catches our cries
And carries our laughter
To the innocent skies.
PC
A northerly wind, sea salt & spray
Carry me back to Embleton Bay
Chorus
Embleton Bay, Embleton Bay
We are children forever
On Embleton Bay x2
M8
Who are we? What were we and what will we be?
I cast all these mysteries to the wind and the sea.
Memories & moments
The Moon washes them away.
We will leave them forever on Embleton Bay.
Chorus
Embleton Bay, Embleton Bay
We are children forever
On Embleton Bay x2
Hi Suzanne, great song. I’ve never been to Embleton Bay (and probably never will), but we all have our favourite seaside spots, and this has brought back some seaside memories of my childhood – so thank you. There are some wonderfully poetic images in this song: ‘As the waves kiss our toes The wind catches our cries’ And carries our laughter To the innocent skies’ That is such a strong image. Great stuff. Cheers.
Thanks, Phil. I was so fortunate to have the childhood I did. Teenage years were angst-ridden but I treasure those earlier memories. Words & imagery have always fascinated me but it’s only recently with TisT I’ve tried being more creative. Once you start, everything seems to flow. For instance, I was thinking earlier today how my folky style is a bit of a niche taste these days, but our songs are like the pebbles on a shingle beach. If someone likes one of them enough to pick it up & take it home with them, then that’s very special. No wonder so many of my friends and families think I’m away with the fairies most of the time. ? ?♀️
Hiya, I like the idea that songs are like pebbles on a beach; for some reason it reminds me of the Mary Chapin Carpenter song ‘Ideas are like stars’. My teen years were angst-ridden too, but I guess most people’s are. That is one of the many positive things about TiT – it gives late bloomers a chance to share our songs, and listen to other peoples. I have written songs, on and off, ever since my late teens, but there is no way I would have shared them with anyone, being ’16, clumsy and shy’ as Morrisey put it. People who are away with the fairies are always more fun! Cheers
A beautiful song, sung and played beautifully, about an idyllic time.
Really beautiful. Fantastically poetic descriptive lyrics that capture the magic of the place and your experience. I loved the melody too and the choice of chords, along with the wonderful performance. I also loved your childhood pictures at the end and felt as if I had relived the experience with you and been invited into a magical time in your life.
I said it on yourYutube channel but I´ll say it agan. Very “Sandy Denny” – and as compliments go that is right up there. It already sounds like a classic
Lovely singing and song 🙂
As I said on FB this is anotger beautiful song Suzanne. Keep them coming! X
Thank you for your kind and comments and taking the time to listen. My brother was was very ill last year and this song is very much about my memories of a time when the carefree days of our childhood seemed to stretch on forever. It helps me to time travel back to those precious moments.
Loved this !xx
Another beautiful song Suzanne. Captures your love for the place and I think we’ve fallen a little bit in the love with a place we’ve never been to through your magically spun lyrics. Beautifully sung too.
Another fabulous song Suzanne. Your words are so good and the music is beautiful. You are becoming prolific!
Another fine song and performance. I now want to find Embleton Bay!
Oh Suzanne, I turn into a child as soon as I touch a beach too. For me it’s Putsborough, but it sounds like a similar memory bank. Beautiful imagery and really sensitively sung. Embleton is such a singable word isn’t it?
Beautifully sung in a slightly melancholic key which suggests the ‘lost innocence’ which this song reflects on. Good work Suzanne!
Reading these comments does my old heart the power of good. Thank you to all of you. I’ve wanted to write about Embleton Bay for so long and these challenges encourage me to focus and find time to play around with ideas. It’s never wasted time. ??
