Broken Compass

This is my entry for this months #settingsail challenge. It’s a song about sailing away on a voyage of self discovery and dealing with obstacles along the way. Recorded live into my iPhone against a backing track (fiddle and strummed acoustic guitar) I created earlier. It is called “Broken Compass”, and it was written on Wednesday and completed today (Saturday 8th April). My intention was to create a song which different listeners could make sense of in different ways, rather than telling a more obvious story like I usually do. It is also a reflection of my own voyage of self-discovery.

  1. Broken Compass Lyrics

    Intro:

    Verse 1:
Setting sail on a sea of expectations based on misery
Mustn’t fail but a broken compass cannot guide you home
    cannot guide you home

    Verse 2:
Look for a beacon in the night a guiding lighthouse close to shore
There is a reason that you may not steer toward the land
    And find a helping hand

    Chorus:
Not your fault, the damage was done long ago
When your fears and tears were truly felt
Decisions made affect you in the here and now
So you vow to learn how

    Break:

    Verse 3:
You take your time and the expectations fall away before your eyes
The compass needle shows the way to go towards your dreams
    You see the lighthouse beam

    Verse 4:
You sail away on a silent sea, a silent sea so far away
Your destination reached your boat is beached upon the sand
And there I’ll take your hand.

    Chorus
Not your fault, the damage was done long ago
When your fears and tears were truly felt
Decisions made affect you in the here and now
So you vow to learn how

    Instrumental:

    Outtro:
You sail away on a silent sea, a silent sea so far away
Your destination reached your boat is beached upon the sand
And there I’ll take your hand

    Take your hand
    Take your hand
    Take your hand
    Take your hand

  2. I really love this. The lyric is very cleverly constructed – all the mid-line rhymes and alliteration make it flow beautifully, and the fiddle adds colour to the song. Brilliant!

  3. Interesting that you got that quality of recording on your phone – I must try it. I like the way you leave the interpretation to the listener. The fiddle is the icing on the cake for me, though. Nice one.

  4. Love the fiddle – really makes the song stand out. Is there a reason for the capo being on the second fret? It seems the melody would come right into your range if it was a tone down. But just a suggestion. The guitar is nice too and plays a nice counter to the fiddle. Some nice internal rhymes in the lyrics too.

  5. This is great Ervin. I really like the rhythm on the lyrics in verse. Lovely mood catching chord choices. I think you succeeded in enough ambiguity for interpretation. Think this might be favourite of yours so far. Fiddle sounds lovely – did you play it?
