Boudicca (they should have left that woman well alone)
I think it speaks for itself – had a bit of trouble though – guitar strings need renewing and blister on me thumb – I kept going though!!
61AD the Romans were here
They were strong – they were feared.
Nero ruled the land with an iron fist.
The tribes, they had to swear allegiance to Rome and its existence,
Even the Iceni tribe agreed to this.
But they didn’t count on Boudicca
They should have left that woman well alone
No, they didn’t count on Boudicca
They should have left that woman well alone.
When the king of the Iceni died
Nero took his chance and tried to steal his land and annex it to Rome.
He flogged the Iceni Queen – raped her daughters so it seemed
All of their fight had gone.
But he didn’t count on Boudicca
He should have left that woman well alone.
No, he didn’t count on Boudicca
He should have left that woman well alone.
She raised an army – a hundred thousand strong,
Said she won’t be happy until all the Romans were gone.
Seventy thousand Romans died as well as those that took their side,
From Colchester to London she did reign.
All the streets run with blood
making for bright red mud,
whatever the Romans lost she gained.
They didn’t count on Boudicca
They should have left that woman well alone
No, they didn’t count on Boudicca
they should have left that woman well alone.
At the battle of Watling Street, Boudicca, she met defeat,
Her and her daughters took their own lives.
But even though she lost, she won
For the damage had been done
to that great Roman Empire
Because, they didn’t count on Boudicca
They should have left that woman well alone.
No, they shouldn’t have messed with Boudicca
They should have left that woman well alone!
Great story telling Dave. Guitar is a bit quiet. Nice performance
Great story telling Dave😁👍
Enjoyed listening this and learning about the story! Nice guitar work, actually; you didn’t have too much trouble!
Great storytelling and performance Dave.
Well I’ve learnt something. Thanks
Good retelling of the Boudicca story – I like the memorable hook at the end of each verse. Well done Dave.
I’d heard of here but not the specifics. Thanks for the telling of the story. I really like the refrain “they didn’t count of Boudicca ….” Is it wrong that I’m also intrigued by a antipodean singing about a northern hemisphere character? (Have o got that wrong)
Great story song Dave with a lovely mellow feel.
Thanks for all the nice feedback everyone – it is only the second song i’ve posted but really enjoy the challenges and so many good songwriters out there too.
Really nice vibes and great story.
I loved this. I really enjoyed all the minor chords , they anticipated the sad ending for her. great.
Thanks for that, Julie – Glad you enjoyed it.
