2025 Competition Entry:

The Journey by Richard Turgeon

Genre

Rock

Co-writer(s)

no

Performer(s)

I performed all parts: drums, vocals, guitars. My friend Ron Guensche played bass. I also recorded, mixed and mastered the song. I am the songwriter (lyrics, music, melody).

Description

The song is a tribute to my wife, who started a personal journey at the time of my writing it. The song is dedicated to her. We’ve been together for 18 years and have two children together. My father called me after listening to this song, saying it should be a hit. He has only done this once or twice in my entire life. I grew up listening to him play folk songs on his guitar, although he never pursued music professionally.

Bio

Richard Turgeon is a suburban dad living in San Francisco who writes and records original rock songs. He typically records and performs all parts, including vocals, guitars, and drums, with occasional support on bass and keys. He’s also a screenwriter and recently optioned his most recent, HOLY MAN.

Rich’s last four LPs of original material were released on Kool Kat Records (CD only) and digitally to solid reviews, airplay, and made many best-of-year lists from radio stations (SiriusXM, Rodney Bingenheimer) and press outlets from around the world.

Lyrics

We lie here in the darkness
Something out there calls your name
Beyond the shadows there’s a whisper
And we’ll never be the same

Take one last look in the mirror
The surface cracks will heal in time
Traveling far will bring you nearer
To the bonds that make you mine

You will start the journey, to a private place, on this cold night
I can’t follow you, down the winding trails, under the moonlight
You will have to look, deep within yourself, wherever you roam
I’ll be there with you, every step you take, before you come home

It’s finally time to face the future
And fight the demons in your past
I’ll be beside you in the present
I’ll be the guiding light that lasts

I can feel the thorns, tearing at your body, through your memories
I will pull you up, help you find your way, until you find peace
