The Family Farm
By Leigh Ann Matthews © 2023
He spent every night of his whole life – In this old house where he was born
He spends every morning on this old porch – In his favorite chair though it’s old and worn
For 60 years he’s watched the sun rise over that hill
A cup of coffee to warm his hands and to fight the morning chill
Before he starts another day on the family farm
This old farm has seen the years – The good times, the bad times and the tears
This piece of land is all he knows – Been in his family 200 years
His wife died back in 95 and his son just moved away
He asks the Lord to save the farm every day when he prays
On his knees once again– for the family farm
Bridge
The barn down by the creek finally fell to the ground
There’s not much he could do but burn the rest of it down
Sometimes he thinks he ought to just pack up and move to town
But he’s holding on – he keeps holding on
Then one day a car pulled in the drive – His son stepped out with tears in his eyes
The pain just disappeared in the summer wind -Cause family love holds true till the end
He said we’ve had all the city life that we can take
We want to raise our kids like me if you’ve got the room we’ll stay
I’ve come home to take care of you – and the family farm
