Description
I wrote the song during Covid lockdown in 2020. My wife and I had a slight disagreement as she blamed me for not doing something she’d asked me to do. I was convinced she didn’t ask me and I remember saying to her “the blame’s not mine”. That phrase stuck in my head and later that day I decided to write a song using it but in a different context and with a deeper meaning.
I wrote the lyrics, the melody and the guitar chords more or less in tandem using my acoustic guitar. I struggled at first as I envisaged a ballad with big choruses until I realised that it was developing into an unusual ( for me) adult themed type of lullaby which intrigued me so I stuck with it. I tried to get the song recorded by someone I knew but the vocal just didn’t work the way I wanted so I shelved everything and the song gathered dust for over 4 years.
In the summer of 2024 I met Leeds based vocalist Kate Peters at one of her shows in my local area and knew she had the ability to do justice to this song (and another I was working on at the time) and we have since recorded both of them as simple demos with her pianist Martin Longhawn and her bass player John Marley. For this song they used my original lyrics, ideas for the melody and guitar chords as the basis for the song, with a little improvisation on piano. It took only 2 attempts to get the mp3 recording I’ve submitted. Although It’s a little raw in parts it is as performed, with no added instrumentation or production effects whatsoever.

The Blame’s Not Mine
Verse
Darkness falls and midnight calls
Crumbling walls and fences fall
As the twilight tries to seize my troubled mind
But it will find that the blame’s not mine
Chorus
We were as one we had it all
But you broke the bond you wanted more
All I wanted was your time
But you closed the door so the blame’s not mine
Verse
Demons fly through my horizon
Daggers drawn it’s not surprising
As the devil’s out to torment my mind
But he will find that the blame’s not mine
Chorus
We were as one we had it all
But you broke the bond you wanted more
All I wanted was your time
But you closed the door so the blame’s not mine
Verse
Here I lie daylight’s dawning
A battle cry for the morning
But the sunlight’s out to bathe my wounded mind
And I’ll survive as the blame’s not mine
Chorus
We were as one we had it all
But you broke the bond you wanted more
All I wanted was your time
But you closed the door so the blame’s not mine
Chorus/Outro
We were as one we had it all
But you broke the bond you wanted more
And you closed the door so the blame’s not mine
The blame’s not mine
The blames not mine
The blame’s not mine
Verse
