Description

The lyrics are all true. I adopted Casey as a kitten (named after KC and the Sunshine Band) in my early 20s. He saw me through a lot of life changes, including my first marriage and divorce, and then new marriage and adoption of my daughter. I started writing this song through tears as he lay in my lap the day before the euthanasia appointment. I finished it while driving home from work under a gray, cloudy sky. It was originally in a minor key, but after my wife heard it she suggested it might be better sounding happy, so I tried it in a major key. She was right. Casey lived to be 23. At that point he’d been with me through most of my adult life. I composed and arranged the music to evoke cat vibes.

Bio

Philip is known in the Sacramento music scene as a guitarist, keyboardist, and singer, currently playing in a tribute band. It’s a popular band, but his real passion is writing and recording his own music. Over the years he’s coached youth bands, recorded other local musicians, and helped run sound for a local theater company. Philip lives with his wife, daughter, and a dozen rescued animals.

Lyrics

My little friend
On cloudy days like these
I close my eyes and remember when
You walked across my piano keys
I don’t know why
I never did compare
Your gray coat and the somber sky
Now it feels like you’re everywhere

Where did the years go?
I can’t believe how they flew
I struggle to remember
When you were tiny and new
Did I do everything?
Did I do right by you?
I’ll plant a lime tree
Where I will bury you
And when it blossoms
I’ll think about the time we had
And I’ll wonder
Did you love me too?

My little friend
You’ve been the constant
While these ever-changing winds
Took me where I did not expect
Now go to sleep
Sink into my lap
Where you go I can’t follow yet
I’ll stroke your fur ’til you breathe your last

Where did the years go?
I can’t believe how they flew
I struggle to remember
When you were tiny and new
Did I do everything?
Did I do right by you?
I’ll plant a lime tree
Where I will bury you
And when it blossoms
I’ll think about the time we had
And I’ll wonder
Did you love me too?

When I found you
I did not expect to live so many lives with you
And now we’re out of time

Where did the years go?
I can’t believe how they flew
I struggle to remember
When you were tiny and new
Did I do everything?
Did I do right by you?
I’ll plant a lime tree
Where I will bury you
And when it blossoms
I’ll think about the time we had
And I’ll wonder
Did you love me too?
